Ricky Hatton: “I can do better”

Ricky Hatton tells BBC he wants Floyd Mayweather

Ricky HattonManchester’s Hitman Ricky Hatton has heard and read what some of his critics have said and written about his declining powers based on his sub-par performance in his last fight against Juan Urango in Las Vegas, but the IBF junior welterweight champ begs to differ.

“The Americans know I’m a good fighter,â€? Hatton told BBC Sport, “but I’ve not had the two easiest opponents to look good against. I think I’ve looked as exciting as they expect me to be, but I know I can do better.

“In my last two fights in the US, I’ve had two southpaws over two different weights and it has been difficult to move up and down weight divisions.

“Some of my opponents are awkward style-wise and you are not going to shine against them. That is nothing to do with my weight but all to do with the opponents.

“I’m going to America and beating world champions for their belts. I don’t think many people can argue with 42 fights unbeaten and six world championship belts.

“I’ve achieved the vast majority of my goals like topping the bill in Las Vegas, winning belts and boxing at Madison Square Garden and Atlantic City. But to become the best pound-for-pound on the planet in any weight division would be amazing and I’m well capable of doing that.

“The only thing I have left to prove to anyone is to beat Floyd Mayweather.”

Is Mayweather scared and announcing retirement after DLH fight? Does he see that Ricky hatton is coming to get him? Hatton is in his prime. And Floyd’s decisions are strange. OK, I wish you fought with Mayweather. And let better fighter win.

  2. Justin says:

    hatton cant beat mayweather

  3. Scott Mallon says:

Somehow I don’t think Mayweather is frightened of Hatton.

  4. Bob says:

Ricky Hatton is an exciting fighter to watch no matter who is he fighting…I believe that on any given night he could win a decision over Mayweather or perhaps De Lahoya if Oscar would entertain the idea…at this level of boxing it is a coin toss as to who comes out on top…biggest difference may be the fighter’s heart. Giving Ricky two thumbs up…good to have him in today’s mix…

  5. Franco says:

Hatton is a punching bag when it comes to Floyd. He is not even in the same par with Mayweather. He must stop using Floyd’d name to gain publicity. Floyd wanted to fight him long ago and his corner protected his ass saying he is not ready to face Pretty Boy. Now with 2 lousy fights inthe US, he thinks the can beat Floyd? No way, besides which other boxer Hatton would generate more money fighting with?

  6. byron cruiuse says:

Ricky is one of the best boxers around, if any one has anythings to say bout him just watch his fights there amazing.

  7. Shaka says:

Hatton vs Mayweather is another Mayweather vs Gatti

  8. Scott Mallon says:

PBF wins and makes his fights look easy; Hatton is not in the same league as Mayweather and will get battered from pillar to post.

BTW – I’ve seen quite a few Hatton fights and rarely has he looked “Amazing.”

  9. Manny says:

it being superbowl week i will simply say mayweather is the manning of the match arguably the best fighter of his time and hatton althought unbeaten is the rex grossman of that match up. other than kosta at the end of his career who has he beat. dont get me wrong i like hatton and think he is talented but he hasn’t earned the right to be mentioned in the same breath as ‘PRETTY-BOY”.

  10. Ed Egan says:

Too many worship Mayweather. Mayweather hand picks his opponents. Not to say he is not great…he is great. But sometimes great is sub-par, especially if you’re one of those that think Mayweather is great and use the Gatti fight as an example. Gatti, although a true warrior, never had the skills to begine when he accepted a fight with Mayweather. Now we get to watch Mayweather matched against a boxer who really is only a shadow of what he once was…De La Hoya. De La Hoya was a great fighter but the reality is he’s probably 5+ years past his prime. If Mayweather really wanted to prove something he would fight the likes of Hatton, Cotto, Margaritto or Paul Williams. Beat those fighters and he not just great…he’s legendary.

  11. RDA says:

You are right Mayweather wanted to fight Hatton until he saw what Hatton did to Tszyu. In every move up since lightweight Mayweather has avoided the danger men. Hatton wins.

  12. pr boxing says:

Luis Collazo outboxed and outclassed Ricky and he’s not even close to being the boxer Floyd is.Ricky needs to prove he belongs to be mentioned with the top welters.Personally I think COTTO would destroy Hatton.Paul Williams would too!

  13. Calmm32 says:

Hatton is boring. All he does is hit and hold. You don’t need any talent to do that. How can anyone say that’s exciting to watch…a hugger

  14. AdamEating says:

Calmm, PBF when fighting over 135lbs. is one of the most boring fighters in world to watch. Stick…. run away. Stick…. run away. Ow, I broke my hand. What Hatton does takes massive amounts of talent.

Ed, De la Hoya is a ripe old 33 years old. Wow! He’s so over the hill. Lets review Oscar’s loses. A robbery against Felix. Two very close ones that could have gone either way against Mosely, and one stoppage at the right hand of a much bigger and stronger B-Hop. De la Hoya has only been stopped once. And it was a rib shot! He’s as young as a 33 year old boxer can be. Floyd is making the mistake of fighting Oscar at middle weight. 155lbs is a lot harder to keep moving for twelve rounds. Watch Floyd’s legs start to tire in the later rounds as De la Hoya begins to close the gap. If PBF hits Oscar a lot early, so much the better. His hands will be useless by the eighth. If this one goes the distance, which it likely will. And if it is close, De la Hoya will get the decision just as Trinidad did as the sentimental favorite all those years ago.

But this is a forum about Ricky’s chances against the Pretty Boy. It would be no Gatti fight thats for sure. But they would likely meet at a weight that Floyd is comfortable at. PBF’s superior conditioning would be the difference. Hatton would look a lot like Corrales chasing PBF round after round. All the while Floyd would be pot stabbing him with jabs to the belly, crisp left hooks, and straight right hand leads. No stoppage in this one either. Floyd wins on points as he piles up enough of a lead early in the fight that he can cruise later when his hands again betray him.

Bottom line is this. Hatton might get a chance at the Pretty Boy but only after De la Hoya hangs a first loss on his record. If he ever gets that chance he’d better find a way to take PBF’s legs away from him and force him to fight. Emanual Burton said after his fight with Floyd that it had been more like running a race than fighting. Had it been a fight instead of a series of wind sprints that fight and many others against punchers could have been dramatically different. Take his mobility away from him and PBF becomes a lighting fast scorer who can’t hit his opponent hard enough to keep them off. No one has figured out how to take his legs yet. I think Oscars got the right idea by making him fight heavy, but time will tell.

  15. Bigg says:

Hatton did not want fight PBF at 140 or Cotto or Witter. What make you think the head butt and hugger king. Would fight PBF at 147. ODH can’t beat a superior boxer Whitaker, Moseley, Strum . PBF spar 20 round for conditioning, PBF will at 148 to 151, this what he has been waiting for to beat the golden boy. Willie pep, Sugar Ray Robinson. Would be proud. Don’t let hate or the way you think PBF should act cloud your judgement. If you think any boxers like being hit three times to one b.s. if they say different, because they have no skills.

  16. Paulie says:

    Floyd isn’t just ‘ducking’ Margarito.

If he does retire after ODLH, he’d be doing so because he’s also avoiding Williams, Cotto, Collazo, Mosley, Margarito and possibly Hatton.

Also, I know this may sound controversial, but I think a prime Kostya Tszyu would have beaten PBF from pillar to post – but might have still been on the wrong end of a terrible decision ala Castillo.

  17. Guy says:

All these so-called champions are a little too choosy in their opponents now a days. PBF has been fighting Bruseles, Mitchell, Corley, et al. Hatton is looking like hell fighting Collazo and most recently Urango. Calzaghe keeps calling people out then fighting Bika, Ashira, Veit, etc.
Even Margarito is acting like a hypocrite. After years of saying he was being ducked, what is he now doing to Paul Williams????? I’m not even going to mention the entire heavyweight division.

    Talk is cheap, champions.

Give me Pacquiao, Barrera, Isreal Vasquez, and even Jermain Taylor (he’s doesn’t always look great, but he’s taking on the best possible opponents). Diego Corrales belongs in this group also, just look at his last six fights (3 Casamayors, 2 Castillos and 1 Freitas).

  18. lurkyshaka says:

Hatton has a better chance of getting pregnant then beating PBF. The guy has no disernable boxing skill, and his hit and hold tactic is quickly becoming as good if not better than John “The Quiet Man” Ruiz. Ricky should stick to fighting c class fighters in England. Thats the only chance he has to keep his undefeated record. Because pretty much all of the big names at 147 would beat his brains out. JMO

  19. DarkShark7 says:

I think hatton will floor mayweather, with his vicious body attack, i expect a dlh-bhop ending!!

  20. The Real lurkyshaka says:

Despite what some phony lurkyshaka has to say…….Hatton will beat Floyd mayweather if they ever do fight.

Ricky has the speed, pressure and style to give Mayweather major problems. Floyd likes to control a fights tempo but will have a tempo forced onto him. He’ll be pushed around and bullied and outworked.

  21. mandy(uk) says:

Everyone on here whos slagging ricky hatton off, you need your heads testing, a couple of bad fights and your writing him off. Fair enough he’s not fought brilliant against southpaws, but he’s never lost a fight and i don’t care what any of you say he ant hand picked every single one of them fights himself, your crazy if you think he has,and to you who said he should go back to fighting c class British fighters, i assume your American and don’t no jack about our fighters, if you did you wouldnt be coming out with stupid talk like that, you might not like him but to say he can’t fight, u don’t no what your on about………..

  22. SPARTAN(from the USA) says:

Anyone who thinks Hatton had a “sub-par performance in his last fight against Juan Urango” doesn’t know boxing!!! He beat the Urango convincingly!!! PERIOD!

  23. Jang says:

Listen everybody ricky is a very good fighter i have gone to some of his fights, but i have seen mayweather fight to and honestly i believe mayweather would beat him by points. when mayweather knowns he has a good oppenent he always brings the best and i believe he will be oscar and oscar would beat hatton now, just because he has more power than hatton and has much better defence. hatton lets himself go between fights and now you can tell in his fights that he gets tried quicker but before when he was a bit young he could fight for 15 rounds not a problem…. Mayweather might retrie if he wins againt oscar so he can retire unbeaten…. back to hatton he needs to fight at least 2 fights a years if not 3 this year, one fight isnt good enough…..

  24. Major Abel Aziz says:

I have read a lot about Hatton’s love for hanging about the pubs of Manchester & getting swacked on Guinness with his mates between fights. It’s said that he balloons up in weight to the point where he has to diet & train like a madman to get down to his fighting weight before a match. If this is true, & I tend to think that it probably is, there is no way that this lifestyle isn’t taking a phyisical toll on him. This could easily explain why he has failed to regain the form he showed in the Tszyu contest in his more recent bouts.

  25. sam says:

personally i think the fight between the two wud b unpredictable because hattons body attack would definetely hurt mayweather but the only time hatton would have a chance at getting to the body would b the l8r rounds
therefore he will have to keep his fitness levels up to ther previous , and not baloon up because that is effecting his stamina dramatically

  26. Jordan says:

Mayweather scared of hatton… i think not… Mayweather would absolutely outwork the man from manchester, Hatton would not be ablt to do what he does best (work on the inside) against mayweather because he would not get close enough, mayweathers defense is to strong.

  27. FLOYD IS OVERRATED says:

Floyd is the most overrated boxer of all time
    Floyd has defeated 35 nobodies
Floyd has defeated Gatti at his worst
Floyd has defeated Zab by decision
Floyd has lost to De La Hoya

Cotto vs Hatton would be a great fight
Both Cotto and Hatton could easily destroy Pretty Boy Floyd

  28. Josh Reynolds says:

ricky hattonin in my oppinion is the best pound 4 pound fighter in the world
he hs beaten evry1 there is 2 beat at welterweight kosta tyzu, carlos mauzer, louiz colazo, juan urango and hose louis castillo 2 hes 2 weight world champion hatton would be 2 mutch 4 mayweather he would not be able 2 handle is work rate hatton would knock 10 cans of shit out of mayweather cotto would batter mayweather floyd is so over rated after hatton beats mayweather he should fight cotto or mosely then if he wins then he should retire as the best world welterweight champion of all time

  29. jerald davis says:
