Holyfield Comeback Continues: To Fight Maddalone
By Michael Woods February 14th, 2007Real Deal Holyfield meets Vinny Maddalone in Corpus Christi
He has ended his disastrous flirtation with promoter Murad Muhammad, and now Evander Holyfield’s quest to gain a heavyweight title for the fifth time is back on track.
Holyfield (40-8-2, 26 KOs) will glove up on Saturday, March 17th, and his opponent will be 33-year-old New York strongman Vinny Maddalone (27-3, 19 KOs). The bout will take place at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas.
The event is being promoted by Main Events, with an assist from Star Boxing.
Calvin Brock (29-1, Charlotte, NC) and undefeated bantamweight prospect Raul Martinez (17-0, San Antonio) are also slated to appear. Opponents for Brock and Martinez are to be announced, as is the remainder of the card.
Tickets for the event are priced at $250 (VIP), $150, $100, $75, $50 & $35 and go on sale this Saturday, February 17th at the American Bank Center box office, all TicketMaster outlets, including online at www.ticketmaster.com and by phone at 361-881-8499.
Holyfield recently came off a two year layoff to score two victories. On August 18th, he downed insurance broker Jeremy Bates in Dallas. And in his last bout on November 10 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Holyfield decisioned contender Fres Oquendo, no small feat for a 44-year-old man…
The fallout from that promotion was intense; it was revealed that Holyfield’s promoter, Muhammad, didn’t have the funds at hand to pay everyone associated with the event on a timely basis.
Holyfield jettisoned Muhammad, and has returned to his old promotional outfit, Main Events.

Sad…my intitial reaction was “Wow, this is going to be a good match-up”. But it’s Holyfield! Why is that man not retired? I wouldn’t be surprised if Vinny knocks Evander out.

I wouldn’t be surprised if you were a complete idiot. Give the man credit. He just out pointed a bonified contender and has looked pretty damn good in his 2 comebacks. He’s still a better fighter than the majority of so called heavyweight contenders out there and he may in the end shock the hell out of a lot of the skeptics who have always been down on him and always been proven wrong in the end. He was going to be “killed” when he fought Tyson! Maybe he’ll accomplish his feat and maybe he won’t but let him do what he wants. Contrary to all experts his health is fine and I’m pulling for him as I ALWAYS have. Best of luck to the one and only “Real Deal”!

Brad, I’m a big Holyfield fan too, but it’s time to hang up the gloves and enjoy retirement before his health is NOT fine. His problem is he is 43 years old and has sacrificed his body in epic battles, going back to his first fight with Qawi. At 43, he can’t sustain the pace he used to set to beat these naturally bigger guys. He should have looked good against Bates, because it was Jeremy freakin’ Bates, but against Fres, Holy was one punch at time plodding around the ring.
Holyfield has nothing left to prove. He fought everyone of his era and was a class champion.

Holyfield will beat Maddalone. Why. Holy seems pretty ripped these days. Wonder Why.
