Hopkins To Face Winky Wright

Bernard Hopkins/Winky Wright “signed, sealed, delivered”

Bernard HopkinsLegendary middleweight Bernard “The Executioner Hopkins has decided to end his short retirement and the speculation about who he’ll fight next.

CEO Golden Boy Promotions, Richard Schaefer, told the LA Daily News yesterday that Hopkins (47-4-1, 32 KOs) and Winky Wright (51-3-1, 25 KOs) have contracts that are “signed, sealed and delivered” to fight each other on July 21.

“We signed it (the contract) in Las Vegas. Different sites are interested. Las Vegas is interested.”

“It’s going to be an interesting showdown,” continued Schaefer. “It’s Bernard fighting another big fight. For him, it’s fighting one of the best fighters again, one who hasn’t lost in a long time. For Winky, a win over Hopkins, think what that would do. Then he would actually be the only fighter who fought and won against the three guys Oscar lost to. So, it is a very interesting fight. A very big fight.”

Hopkins and Wright will fight at a catch-weight of 170 pounds.

I will refuse to pay for the fight. Winky is already hyping it saying that it will be nothing but boring. Yea right! I do think Hopkins has the advantage in this fight. Winky at 170 will be slower and Hopkins will take him deep and dominate the later rounds. Of course both fighters will walk away from this one without blemishes and this fight will be forgotten about the next day. A real sleeper. Winky…does us all a favor and retire already…your style of boxing does nothing for the sport.

Hopkins vs. Wright, could have should have been made 5 years ago. Same thing with Hopkins vs. Jones Jr. My guess is the latter fell through and now all this is a ploy to see what interest there is in Hopkins vs. Wright. I’d much rather see Hopkins vs. Calzaghe.

Any body read the article where Hopkins said something to the effect of ” Winky has never been hit so much in a fight as he will in this fight” it’s true, and no this will not be boring fight. Correct me if I’m wrong but Traver was a souht paw & so is Winky. And if any remebers Hopkins comment after the Tarver fight, Hopkins said he has no problems with south paws, well this won’t be much different. If you ask me I think Hopkins specializes in south paws & probably was the one to give Shane Maosley a few pointers before his fight with Collazo. I like Hopkins & Winky, but I see Winky taking the beating in this one.

Hopkins is like the old wise lion in this fight. i love both fighters, i think this gonna be a real good teknikal fight. and these guys come to fight, i think there will def be periods of bang’n. Hopkins handles southpaws…. i always knew these 2 would fight.

  5. c Says:

Hopkins is fighting Winky because he knows that he can not beat Calzaghe. Calzaghe would demolish Hopkins. This is why Hopkins picked Winky because Winky is an opponent which Hopkins knows he can beat.

  6. The Shadow Says:

I’m dissapointed as well that Hopkins did not sign with Calzaghe. But styles make fights and Hopkins weighed the realities. Joe is to fast and would beat him on points. BHOP has never been one to have alot of power. So he would probably lose that fight. Winky is made for him and he should win in a classic show down. For those of you who think this fight is not going to be a good one. Think again!

  7. Guy Says:

Why is this fight happening now. Oh, because they work in the same promotional company and neither one of them could BEAT the real middleweight champion, Jermain Taylor.

B-Hop is a living legend who just needs to stay retired and wait for his Hall of Fame induction. Winky needs to take a rematch with Taylor even if it means giving Taylor the champion’s share of the purse.

Hopkins DID beat Taylor he just got robbed . Everybody knows that . And if anyone is ducking tough opponents it’s Joe Calzhaghe . His record on that subject speaks for itself . The only reason he fought lacy is Jeff and his team went out of the way to hunt him down .

  9. Frank Da Lawyer Says:

This fight will be an intriquing chess match for both seasoned veterans. Both will also show that they can come out swinging to try to shake the defensive style stigma they have been known for over the years. Power, durability, and agility will be the difference in who can outscore the other. I am a huge Wink fan, and think his youth will prevail, but this will be a very close fight, with some rounds that will be memorable. Possibly, this could end with draw, a la Taylor fight, or split decision.

I think this fight will be boring. It is only a fight for boxing purists. Two counterpunchers does not make for good drama. Boxing is really just styles. Bernard looked like a world beater against Tarver. Winky looked like a world beater against Trinidad. Against one another they will look like crap.
