Changes At HBO

By Michael Woods March 13th, 2007

HBO has announced a switch on their “Boxing After Dark” broadcast team, and no, don’t say you knew it was a matter of time before the Lennox Lewis Experiment was curtailed…

Bob Papa will join the series on March 24, ESPN’s Dan Rafael reports, to handle the blow-by-blow call.

Papa steps in for Fran Charles, and HBO says it was because Charles’ duties with the NFL Network were causing scheduling conflicts.

Riiiight…

Um, isn’t football season sort of over…

But anyway…let’s not be skeptics, shall we?

Max Kellerman and Lennox Lewis will stay put, for now.

On March 24, you can assess the new crew, when HoBO goes to Copenhagen, Denmark, to cover super middle Mikkel Kessler’s defense against Librado Andrade.

Aside: my all time fave Lennox moment: when he was calling the Kelly Pavlik/Zertuche fight, and he misspoke, and called the boxer “Pelvic.”

Say this for Lennox: he does make the broadcast that much more watchable…

Uggh, it’s Max Kellerman I can’t stand. They need to clean house! Lewis is okay, and I think they want the former fighter’s perspective, but I enjoyed Fran.

A change was long overdue and still more should be contemplated. Unfortunately Max is really bad..he was much better at the desk trading “jabs” with Teddy Atlas. On HBO, Max is stiff, dull and just terrible. Lennox looks much more at ease now, and is intelligent and a very enticing guy. How about bringing teddy over to HBO?

Max Kellerman is the BEST in boxing. He knows what he is talking about. If HBO had any sense they would put him on prime time.
I would put Max in and Larry out..so I don’t have to listen to the “It reminds me of two people at a market waiting to get checked out……” blah blah blah stories by Larry Mechant.
