Tumultous Tapia’s Condition Improves

By Boxing News March 15th, 2007

Five-time world champion boxer Johnny Tapia was upgraded to fair condition Wednesday as he recovers from an apparent cocaine overdose, the AP is reporting.

Teresa Tapia, the boxer’s wife and manager, said her husband’s condition has been upgraded, but he’s “not out of the woods yet.”

Tapia, whose lifestyle is best described with the words stitched on his trunks–Mi Vida Loca– is a patient at Presbyterian Hospital in Albequergue, New Mexico; he was taken to the hospital on Monday after he apparently ODd on cocaine in a motel room.

“The doctors tell me he seems to be getting better but he’s not completely back to where he once was,” Teresa Tapia told The Albuquerque Tribune.

The Tapia family received another horrific jolt two days after the apparent OD. On Tuesday, Tapia’s brother-in-law, 39-year-old Robert Gutierrez, was killed, along with his nephew, 23-year-old Ben Garcia, when their vehicle veered off the highway as the pair was traveling to visit the boxer. The car rolled over, ejecting both men. They both died in the wreck.

Booze may be a factor in the crash, as empty bottles were found in the fated vehicle.

Teresa Tapia hasn’t told her husband of the crash, the AP reports.

“We’re just trying to get him strong enough … so we can let him know about this other tragedy,” she said.

Johnny Tapia turned 40 last month, and those who’ve followed his career have worried that he wouldn’t know what to do with himself once his stint as an active boxer came to a close.

He won a majority decision over Evaristo Primero of El Paso, Texas on March 23 in Albequerque in what was billed as his farewell fight. The tumultuous talent’s career mark stands at 56-5-2.

Tapia won five titles in three weight classes, and his fans can only cross their fingers that he gets control of his demonds before they succumb him.

He will now have too much time on his hands, and for a person with self destructive tendencies…well, this biography may well have a sad final chapter.
