Roy Jones vs. Hanshaw On Or Off?
By Michael Woods April 3rd, 2007It looked like Anthony Hanshaw, Gary Shaw, Roy Jones and promoter Lou DiBella were on the same page, and would come to terms so RJJ and Hanshaw could fight on June 2, in a 10-round light heavyweight bout that would have been broadcast live on SHOWTIME.
“We had agreed to terms and signed our parts of the contract,” said Hanshaw’s promoter Gary Shaw in a release. “Lou DiBella was supposed to get Jones to sign all his documents and the promotion would have been ready to go. We are still waiting to hear back. I’m just hoping Roy hasn’t been abducted by aliens!”
“If Jones is refusing to fight a super middleweight moving up to light heavyweight, you can bet he won’t be challenging me either,” said Chad Dawson, the WBC light heavyweight champion. “Maybe he heard DiBella toss out his name as a possible opponent for middleweight champion Jermain Taylor? Roy must like them really small.”
The 50-4 Jones, age 38, last fought on July 29, 2006, when he downed Badi Ajamu in Idaho (UD12).
The 21-0 Hanshaw, age 29, is on a mini-roll, after looking good in Showtimes’ super middleweight tournament last year.
He fought to a draw in the finale against JP Mendy. Before that flurry of activity, he’d been inactive for two years.
Unfortunately for Hanshaw, Jones is Jones, a Hall of Fame talent who can afford to be severely choosy and slooooow when it comes time to picking opponents…

Roy only wants to fight people he knows he can beat or expose. Roy doesnt want to fight anymore. The roy jones 10yrs ago would have gargled and spit out hanshaw in a hurry just because He was Roy Jones Jr. He’s lost alot of star power and recognition as one of the greats and cant take that mentally. Roy just wants to feel like he is in control. We still remember those horrific knockouts. Its time to be humble and fight to finish your career roy. Nobody cares what’ll he do now after this.

Jones should notch another victory or two against Prince Badi-level opposition, and seek a revenge match against Glen Johnson. Assuming he can perform at something near his condition around 2002 or so, he takes a decision over Johnson and should call it a career.
