Clottey Bests Corrales

By Michael Woods April 7th, 2007

Three years ago, he would have been a massive underdog, but this is 2007, and Joshua Clottey (31-2, 20 KOs) dominated former champion Diego Corrales (40-5, 33 KOs) and took a unanimous 10-round decision win at the Shrine Mosque in Springfield, Missouri on Saturday night.

It may be time for Corrales to call it a day, as he absorbed an ugly amount of punishment in the loss.

Clottey had the quicker, and the heavier hands, and his energy didn’t flag as he dished out a beating on Corrales, whose best works came as a 130 and 135 pounder. On this night, he weighed in at 149 pounds.

Corrales went down in the ninth, and did well to stay upright at several other points. But in the tenth, he was sent to the deck again, and his mouthpiece “slipped” out, so the referee deducted a point.

He has now lost three bouts in a row.

The judges saw it 97-90, 98-89 and 100-87.

Corrales was never the greatest. He could have been if he had the discipline to stay outside and use his reach to his advantage. He is a warrior, so he likes to come in and bang. He has taken too much punishment and is on the decline. He might have a chance at 140, but 147 is too much of a stretch.

Clotty is a masterful inside banger with crushing hooks and uppercuts. He reminds me of Ike Quartey (They came rom the same gym). I would like to see him fight Cotto or Citron or even Margarito again. He could handle any of those fighters as he porved against Margarito with a broken hand.
