Quartey Ready To Rock Again
By Boxing News July 19th, 2007Ghanaian Boxing superstar Ike “Bazooka� Quartey (37-4-1, 31 KO’s) is ready to start fighting again and is prepared to take on all comers. While he is busy preparing for the opening of his new hospital in Accra, he has already begun intense training back at home in preparation for his next battle.
The former WBA Welterweight Champion will be moving back down to the 147 pound weight class. The change comes after losing a decision at middleweight against Winky Wright, who has actually gone up in weight to 170 for his next fight.
“Even though everyone knows that I beat Forrest, I did have a tough night against Winky. Neither fight was at the right weight for me,� said Quartey. “I feel like I can be slicker and move better in the ring at 147. Fighting at welter will allow me to polish my defense and have a much more explosive offense in the ring. I’m joining Mosley and Oscar in moving down and I will be a factor in the welterweight division.�
“I still have fire and ability,� said Quartey. “I want to leave a winning legacy for my fans across the world and I plan on doing that at this point in my life. I am in the best shape of my career and am ready to fight the best. I want people to know that Ike Quartey still has what it takes.
�The “Bazooka� has had a storied career which has seen him fight some of the greatest pugilists in the sport including back to back bouts against Oscar De La Hoya and Fernando Vargas.
Quartey looks forward to stepping back into the ring in September or October.

GOOD FOR HIM IKE IS A GREAT FIGHTER THAT HAD A COUPLE OF BAD BREAKS. I ALSO BELIEVE HE WON THE COTTO FIGHT. HE IS GOING TO A DIVISON THAT 147 HAS SOME OF THE BEST FIGHTERS. CAN’T WAIT TO SEE IKE BACK IN THE RING HE’S A PROBLEM FOR ANYONE AT 147

Can anyone think of another time in history when the WW division was so loaded with top talent. If the HW division was like this, the UFC wouldn’t be so cocky with the whole “boxing is dead” thing. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not hatin on Dana’s Boys, I like the UFC, I just love boxing.

Ike Quartey is a warrior and I’d love to see him fight some of the names at welterweight. It is a loaded division right now and Quartey could make some good action fights against Clottey, Margarito, or even Cotto. He’d have to be an underdog against any of them, but you know he comes to fight.

IKe Quartey is past his prime. Ike Quartey ain’t beating any of the good welterweights or whatever weight class he’s fighting in.

Wayne, you’re right, he’s not beating any of the top guys. My point is he could at least make entertaining fights against the right styles. Do I want to see him against PBF, no because Ike no longer has the skills or speed to chase a guy around all night like PBF would make him. But put him with pressure fighters like the ones I named and you have a good fight. Does Ike beat any of them? Probably not, but it’s an entertaining scrap while it lasts.

Quartey in his prime was a very big and strong welterweight. Now at 38 or 39 he’s probably even bigger stonger but slower. He’s never taken a bad beating in the ring like Vargas and Gatti.If he can get down in weight properly without getting weak or drained. He’s going to be dangerous for alot of top welters. Mayweather Mosley and Williams Quickness,Slick movements and counters will probably be to much for Ike. But the straight ahead come foward bodypunchers like Magarito Cotto and Clottey will be in for a long night. Welterweght divsion is looking like it’s going into a Golden age for awhile at least. All were missing now is Forrest Ouma maybe Tito! TITO!?! Some call Richrard Simmons Jenny Craig BillyBlanks QUICK!
