Calzaghe Invites Pavlik
By Uncategorized September 29th, 2007Undefeated WBO/The Ring super middleweight champion JOE CALZAGHE, boxing’s current longest-reigning titleist, congratulates new middleweight kingpin Kelly Pavlik on his victory tonight in Atlantic City.
“Good show, Kelly,” said Calzaghe from his Cardiff-based training camp. “There is no doubt who the real middleweight champion is after tonight. The true world champion met the true No. 1 contender, and that’s the way it should be. Now that Kelly has conquered his division, I would like to invite him to Cardiff for my fight against Mikkel Kessler, which will also serve as my formal coronation as king of the super middleweights. If Kelly is a true champion in search of new territories to conquer, he need look no further than Millennium Stadium on November 3, where the crown heads can meet to discuss the terms of battle.”
Calzaghe (43-0, 32 KOs), from Wales, celebrates 10 years as the WBO champion on October 11. He is preparing for the biggest non-heavyweight world title unification fight since the Sugar Ray Leonard-Tommy Hearns welterweight rumble of 1981, pitting him against undefeated WBC/WBA champion Mikkel Kessler (39-0, 29 KOs), of Denmark, Saturday, November 3, at Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, which will be scaled for an indoor-record of 60,000-plus spectators. Over 35,000 seats have already been sold. HBO World Championship Boxing will televise it live to the U.S. at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT.

There’s not enough money in all of Europe to get Calzaghe to actually step in the ring with Pavlik. Kelly’s going to have a real hard time finding anyone willing to do so.

I agree. Joe C needs to stop being a coward and leave his home turf. If Ricky Hatton can do it, why not him?

Let’s see Joe C get by Kessler first. I make Joe the slight favorite, but Kessler is a LIVE underdog. If Joe looks ahead to Pavlik, he’ll find himself stretched on the canvas. Also, I’m not sure Pavlik is any more formidable than Kessler. Take one step at a time, Joe. Shut up and win the fight that’s in front of you.

Joe better worry about the big Dane in front of him first.

I got respect for Joe C. but you need to come over to the States. we’ll show you how we do in the U.S. Mental edge is always Joe’s b/c he always fights as the hometown boy but i’d like to see how he would do in a fight here in the midwest amongst of all the Ghost fans- bring the fight to Chicago!!! Pavlik ko’s Calzaghe in 10 or less.

Joe is without doubt the best boxer to come out of the UK ever and Im betting he will beat Pavlik probably on decision.

Right now Calzaghe will beat Pavlik without any problems. He will give angles and too much movement. Kelly still has to mature and improve his boxing skills.
A question to you all: why is hardly anybody giving Hatton a chance on Dec.8? I think he will put a lot of pressure and upset PBF. It will be Duran-Leonard I all over again.

hatton has a chance just not a big chance. he will provide more excitement than gatti but i dont think much. i dont think he has enough power or speed for floyd. paul williams high output punching and his height are a much better test. hatton is white and undefeated and from a lighter weight class. that spells big easy money for mayweather at least to me it does. not to mention a steady regimen of diet and trainging makes better performance sense than a all or nothing approach like hattons it wears the body down.

Calzaghe should be respected. Love what Pavlik did this weekend, but asking Joe to come to him is a bit of a pipe dream. He has 20 title defenses, and is quick and super skilled. Plus, he can draw 50,000 to the MEN arena or in Cardiff at the drop of a hat. Sorry, as much as I like Pavlik, boxing is still a big, big deal in Europe. Money talks, and there’s a lot of passion for the sport there. Also, the Calzaghe-Kessler fight should be a CLASSIC. Kessler has a few defenses, and is going to fight Joe at his home. Why? Because the gate will be HUGE. Simple as that.

i see alot of you are aware of how dangerous kessler is and by no means is a pushover or sure thing for calzaghe. the first time i saw mikkel kesseler was when he fought Andrade (sic) a few months ago. holy s–t ! was my first thought .this guy was fantastic,he can box excellent ,move very well and takes a great shot ,all the things that you need to be a great fighter.my heart is with joe but i just dont feel good about this one.lacy was a totally made opponent for calzaghe but kesseler ,im telling you ,he loves to fight and this is his big comng out party.i just think he’s to much for joe calzaghe,i hope im wrong .

Calzaghe is no Andrade. Andrade is a slow, lazy punching bag.
