Marquez Beats McKart

Monday, March 31st, 2008

– Former world junior middleweight champion Raul Marquez continued his middleweight resurrection last Saturday at the Soaring Eagle Casino in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, scoring a ten round win over Bronco McKart.

It was Marquez’ 41st win as a pro and his sixth in a row since he began his comeback in 2006 after a two year absence from the sport. And by clearly beating a former world champion in McKart, the rejuvenated “El Diamante has sent a statement to the middleweight division that he is ready to take on the best as soon as possible.

“Raul continues to impress, and in beating Bronco McKart, he showed that he’s ready for anyone at 160 pounds, said Leon Margules, Executive Director of Seminole Warriors Boxing, Marquez’ promoter. “We’re putting the call out for all champions and top contenders in the middleweight division, and we’re ready for any of them.

Currently ranked tenth in the world by the WBC, eighth by the WBA, and 14th by the WBO, Marquez (41-3, 29 KOs) is a native of Reynosa, Mexico, who now makes his home in Houston, Texas. A member of the 1992 US Olympic team, “El Diamante duplicated his amateur success in the pros as he won the IBF junior middleweight title with a ninth round TKO of Anthony Stephens in 1997. He would defend the title twice before losing it to Yory Boy Campas later that year, but since then he has compiled a record of 13-2 with 1 no contest. Nine of those wins have come by knockout.

The Seminole Warriors Boxing Promotions team congratulates Raul Marquez on another big win.

Rothwell, Sylvia Sign With New Co.

Friday, March 28th, 2008

NEW YORK — Adrenaline MMA announced today that heavyweight stars Tim
Sylvia and Ben Rothwell have signed multi-fight contracts with the
newly-formed promotion.

Sylvia (24-4) is a former 2-time UFC heavyweight champion, while Rothwell
(31-5) was undefeated in the IFL for the champion Quad Cities Silverbacks.

Sylvia, 6-foot-8 and 265 pounds, has fought 13 times in the UFC and
defeated top performers like Jeff Monson, Andre Arlovski (twice), Brandon
Vera, Ricco Rodriguez and Assuerio Silva.

“Adrenaline is a new promotion, but it allows fighters to fight for other
organizations… that’s huge,” Sylvia said. “I’ve got 3 to 4 years left
and want to fight as much as possible, so this is the perfect choice for
me at this time.”

Rothwell, 6-5 and 265, has won 13 straight bouts, including all 9 of his
IFL fights.

“Adrenaline will give me the chance to take things to the next level,”
Rothwell said. “I’m ready to see how I fare against the best heavyweights
in the world.”

Sylvia and Rothwell both train at Miletich Fighting Systems in Bettendorf,
Iowa.

Fedor Parts Ways With M-1

Friday, March 28th, 2008

NEW YORK — M-1 Global announced today a mutual agreement with Vadim Finkelchtein, manager of former PRIDE champion Fedor Emelianenko, to release the heavyweight from his contractual obligations.

“There is so much going on in the world of mixed martial arts right now that we have decided it is in our best interest if our company and Fedor go our separate ways, said M-1 Global President and CEO Monte Cox.

“During the past six months the landscape of MMA, especially in the U.S., has dramatically changed. The sport continues to gain mainstream acceptance and we believe we will be in a better position to capitalize on these new opportunities with this agreement.

“Because Finkelchtein already uses the ‘M-1’ name in Russia and Europe, we have mutually decided to avoid any confusion between our two organizations. Shortly, M-1 Global will announce a new name for its operations and its first event.

“Fedor is a tremendous fighter and a great person… we wish him only the best in his future endeavors, Cox said.

“We appreciate the support that Monte and the M-1 Global team have given Fedor, Finkelchtein said. “We wish M-1 Global great success and hope to work with them sometime in the future.

Collins/Resto Case To Be Reopened?

BOXING’S MOST SHAMEFUL CRIME

FULLY EXPOSED AT LAST

News Conference To Reveal New Information Regarding Collins-Resto Scandal

Official Motion Being Filed Against New York State

Plus Never-Before-Seen Reenactment of Boxing’s Dirtiest Crime

NEW YORK (March 28, 2008) – The date of June 16, 1983, forever will taint the history

of New York sports and the world of boxing. That evening at Madison Square Garden, a

shameful chain of events ended a promising young boxer’s career and changed the lives

of many associated with the tragic scandal.

Thursday, April 3, in New York City
details will be revealed regarding the filing of a

motion to reopen the case of the Collins-Resto scandal with the Federal Court of Claims

against the State of New York.

Nashville, Tennessee’s ‘Irish’ Billy Collins Jr. was an undefeated welterweight and

fulfilling every boxer’s dream of fighting in the world’s most famous arena. Collins’

opponent, Luis Resto, had his own aspirations by playing the spoiler role as the Bronx

underdog who rose to the occasion in front of the hometown fans. What transpired in the

Collins-Resto fight was so heinous it led to Resto’s conviction, incarceration and lifetime

ban from boxing.

Now, as the 25th anniversary of the incident approaches, new evidence has been

uncovered during the making of the film Cornered—which exposes the true nature of the

tragic crime to be much worse than previously reported or known.

“New revelations may lead to revived litigation, said Marc R. Thompson of Manhattan’s

Pulvers, Pulvers and Thompson, the attorney for Andrea Collins-Nile, widow of late the

Billy Collins Jr.

Now, 25 years later, it’s asked: Will justice finally be served for the Collins family and

estate? Will the sport of boxing finally gain closure of this open wound? The answers

start coming forth Thursday, April 3.

“MANDATORY SENTENCES!

World Middleweight Championship

KELLY PAVLIK vs. GARY LOCKETT

AND

WBO Junior Featherweight Championship

DANIEL PONCE DE LEON vs. JUAN MANUEL LOPEZ

Saturday, June 7 – LIVE ON HBO

Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall

TICKETS ON SALE FRIDAY at NOON ET!

ATLANTIC CITY (March 27, 2008) – “Great Caesars Ghost!â€? Undefeated world middleweight champion KELLY “The Ghostâ€? PAVLIK returns to his old haunt — Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall — where he first captured the world title, Saturday, June 7, in his first world title defense. Pavlik faces a mandatory sentence when he rumbles with No. 1 contender and mandatory challenger, Welshman GARY “The Rocketâ€? LOCKETT, who will be making his U.S. debut. Promoted by Top Rank, in association with Frank Warren’s Sports Network and Caesars Atlantic City, the Pavlik-Lockett world title fight will be televised live on HBO World Championship Boxing, beginning at 9:35 p.m. EDT / 6:35 p.m. PDT. Opening the broadcast will be World Boxing Organization (WBO) junior featherweight champion Daniel Ponce De Leon defending his title against undefeated No. 1 contender and mandatory challenger Juan Manuel Lopez.

Combined, this quartet of sluggers boasts an incredible record of 118-2 (99 KOs), a winning percentage of over 98% and a victory by knockout ratio of 84%!

Tickets, priced at $500, $300, $200, $100 and $50, go on sale Tomorrow! Friday, March 28, at Noon ET, and can be purchased at the Boardwalk Hall box office, by calling Ticketmaster (800) 736-1420 or online at www.Ticketmaster.com.

“My world title reign is going to be no different than my world title climb. I’m going to keep fighting the best men out there, said Pavlik. “My last two victories over Jermain Taylor proved that I wasn’t just the world middleweight champion, but the best man in the game, pound for pound. I promised the fans I would be an active champion and that I wouldn’t duck anyone, and I intend to live up to that pledge. It wasn’t that long ago that I was the number one contender. I know the hunger Lockett has for my title. It’s back to the “factory for me for heavy training. I will be 150% for this fight!

“This fight has got all the ingredients for a good old-fashioned punch-up,â€? said Lockett. I know I’m going to be a massive underdog because, worldwide, I’m very, very unknown. But I’m a lot tougher than people think. I’ve got a good chin and I can pack a wallop myself. And I’ve got the best trainer in the business in Enzo Calzaghe. Pavlik is among the best pound-for-pound but he looks beatable. He’s no Superman, he has plenty of flaws and we will put together an effective system to beat him.â€?

“Kelly Pavlik showed in his last fight he is on his road to becoming a superstar,â€? said Bob Arum, chairman of Top Rank. “But now Kelly faces a tough test against the No. 1 mandatory challenger, Gary Lockett, who has battled hard and has won 14 fights in a row. He has not lost a fight in over five years.”

“Gary can punch and Pavlik doesn’t have the best of defenses,â€? said Frank Warren, Lockett’s promoter. “But it’s a great opportunity for Lockett. Now it’s up to him to do the rest.â€?

“‘Kelly Pavlik is one of the premier prizefighters in the sport today” said Kery Davis, Senior VP of Programming for HBO Sports. “It’s great to present his first title defense live on our flagship series. Gary Lockett has the opportunity to show his heart and skill in challenging for the one of the most coveted titles in the sport.”

“Caesars is very excited to welcome world champion Kelly Pavlik and his huge contigent of Youngstown, Ohio fans back to Atlantic City,â€? said Harrah’s Entertainment Sports & Entertainment Consultant Ken Condon.

“We are looking forward to what is sure to be another fabulous night of championship boxing at Boardwalk Hall with these two great match-ups.”

Pavlik (33-0, 29 KOs), from Youngstown, Ohio, joins former lightweight champions Harry Arroyo and Ray “Boom Boom Mancini as hometown world champions. Pavlik Ghost wrote a career year in 2007 against three of the best who boasted a combined record of 74-4-3 (55 KOs) when he faced them. The consensus “Fighter of the Year for 2007, Pavlik knocked out Jose Luis Zertuche (19-3-2, 14 KOs) and Edison Miranda (28-1, 24 KOs), in world title elimination bouts, earning him the right to become Taylor’s mandatory challenger. His year-end finale, a seventh-round stoppage of the previously undefeated Taylor, to claim the world middleweight championship, was selected as the “Fight of the Year by the Boxing Writers Association of America and extended Pavlik’s two-year victory by knockout streak to nine bouts. Pavlik defeated Taylor handily in their rematch last February to solidify his claim as one of boxing’s top pound for pound fighters.

Lockett (30-1, 21 KOs), from Cwmbran, Wales, is riding a six-year, 14-bout unbeaten streak. His only loss, a split-decision WBO Intercontinental junior middleweight title defense in 2002, was avenged one year later, via a 10-round super middleweight unanimous decision. Trained by BWAA “2007 Trainer of the Year, Enzo Calzaghe, Lockett boasts dangerous punching power as 70% of his victims can attest to having lost to him by knockout. Lockett captured the World Boxing Union middleweight title in 2006, knocking out Gilbert Eastman in the first round, and successfully defended it twice, via a unanimous decision over Ryan Rhodes and a third-round knockout of Lee Blundell in 2006 and 2007, respectively. A teenage prodigy as an amateur, with a 90-8 record, Lockett captured 22 titles at the Welsh level or above, including four British junior crowns and the inaugural 1992 European Under-16 gold medal in Italy.

De Leon (34-1, 30 KOs), from Huntington Park, California, by way of Cuauhtemoc, Chihuahua, Mexico, is riding a three-year, 10-bout winning streak, including six defenses of the WBO junior featherweight title he has held since 2005.

A 2000 Mexican Olympian and five-time national champion, De Leon, a natural southpaw, is known for his aggressive style, constant pressure, and strong punching power. His best world title victories have been over previously undefeated contenders Rey Bautista and Sod Looknongyabtoy, and two-division world champion Gerry Penalosa.

Lopez (21-0, 19 KOs), from Caguas, Puerto Rico, has held the WBO Latino junior featherweight title since 2006. A member of Puerto Rico’s 2004 Olympic team, Lopez has climbed to the top of the ratings in an incredibly short amount of time. To say he is on a tear is no understatement inasmuch as he hasn’t gone the distance since June 10, 2006, knocking out his last nine opponents while garnering rave reviews and comparisons to Puerto Rico’s finest world champions, including Miguel Cotto, Felix Trinidad and Wilfredo Gomez. A natural southpaw, like De Leon, Lopez’s arsenal features good punching power and an aggressive, pressuring style of fighting.

Raul Marquez To Meet McKart

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

HOLLYWOOD, FL, March 27 – Winner of five fights in a row, all by knockout, since beginning his 2006 comeback, former 1992 United States Olympian and world junior middleweight champion Raul Marquez plans on keeping his amazing streak going this Saturday night when he takes on former world titlist Bronco McKart at the Soaring Eagle Casino in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. This is another step for Marquez as he moves toward claiming the world title in the middleweight division.

This 10 round middleweight bout, which headlines a seven bout card presented by CLIP Boxing and Blue Cap Promotions, will air live on the internet via www.gofightlive.tv, beginning at 8pm ET.

Currently ranked tenth in the world by the WBC, eighth by the WBA, and 14th by the WBO, Marquez (40-3, 29 KOs), who is promoted by Seminole Warriors Boxing, is a native of Reynosa, Mexico, who now makes his home in Houston, Texas. A member of the 1992 US Olympic team, “El Diamante duplicated his amateur success in the pros as he won the IBF junior middleweight title with a ninth round TKO of Anthony Stephens in 1997. He would defend the title twice before losing it to Yory Boy Campas later that year, but since then he has compiled a record of 12-2 with 1 no contest. Nine of those wins have come by knockout.

In McKart, Marquez will be facing a veteran of over 15 years in the pro game who has weathered boxing’s ups and downs and still emerged as a relevant contender and title threat. A former WBO junior middleweight champion, the 37-year old McKart has won three of his last four bouts, and is looking to make it four out of five this Saturday.

Bazan Promises To Down Foe

Bazan predicts McCloskey’s downfall

Former World Champion Cesar Bazan arrived in Letterkenny this week promising to wreck Paul McCloskey’s unbeaten record. The two men meet in the top of the bill on this Saturday’s Hunky Dorys Fight Night at the Letterkenny Leisure Complex and Bazan is brimming with confidence ahead of the clash.

The Mexican arrived in Letterkenny on Sunday to acclimatise after a gruelling 6 week training camp in the mountains near his native Mexico City.

“Everything has been great since I arrived in Ireland, the people have been very nice and it is a beautiful country. I have trained long and hard for this fight and I am in great shape. I had 4 fights in France earlier in my career so fighting and winning in Europe is nothing new to me.

Bazan admits to knowing little about McCloskey or caring for his ever-growing reputation as one of the light welterweight division’s hottest prospects. “I never heard of Paul McCloskey until I was asked to fight him and I don’t think I’ll be hearing any more about him after this weekend either. I am only concerned with myself and my preparations.

Now 33 Bazan captured the WBC Lightweight title in 1998 by beating Stevie Johnson. He made 2 successful defences before losing to Johnson in a rematch on a split decision but Bazan believes he’s still capable of recapturing his world title winning form.

His current record stands at 46 wins and 9 defeats but he disputes all but 2 of those losses. “Except for my losses to Miguel Cotto and Jose Luis Castillo all my losses have been controversial. Just look at my record and see how many split decisions have gone against me and in the other guys hometown. What does that tell you?

“I just hope I get a fair deal in Ireland but I don’t think there will be any doubt about the winner of this fight. I know I have the power to knock out McCloskey. I wish Paul McCloskey well in his career but he is not in my league. I have fought the best and beaten the best, McCloskey hasn’t beaten anyone so far.

McCloskey insists that he’s undaunted by Bazan’s reputation. “His record is certainly impressive, admitted the Dungiven southpaw. “He’s a puncher and has twice as many KO’s as I’ve had fights so you have to respect that. He’s also very durable and has only been stopped by big names like Miguel Cotto and Jose Luis Castillo. But having said all that I’ve been ready for fights like this for some time now so I’m looking to go in there and do an impressive job on this guy.

The undercard will feature former World title challenger and British Champion Neil Sinclair. The power punching Belfast man is desperate to get back in to title contention but first he will need to get past durable Spaniard Juan Martinez Bas in Letterkenny.

Also on the undercard are a pair of reigning Irish Champions, Light Welterweight title holder, Andrew Murray and Light Middleweight kingpin Ciaran Healy. Murray has stepped in for the injured Stephen Haughian in what will be a quick return to action following a stoppage win on the Macklin – Campas undercard in Dublin last weekend.

Healy will be out for revenge in his 8 round contest with Pavel Lotah. The Latvian outpointed him over 6 rounds in Limerick last month so Healy will be looking to even the score in Letterkenny.

Also on the bill is undefeated Omagh prospect Damian Taggart and new pro Luke Wilton who will be making his first start in the paid ranks.

Cuban heavyweight Mike Perez has also been forced off the card with an injury suffered in last weekend’s win at the National Stadium.

Tickets for the Hunky Dorys Fight Night priced from €60 are on sale from Ticketmaster.ie and all usual outlets.
