WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING®: OSCAR DE LA HOYA VS. STEVE FORBES

IS SEEN LIVE SATURDAY, MAY 3, ON HBO

Superstar Oscar De La Hoya, aka “The Golden Boy, fights in front of a hometown crowd for the first time since 2000 when WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING: OSCAR DE LA HOYA VS. STEVE FORBES is seen live SATURDAY, MAY 3 (10:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. PT) from The Home Depot Center in Carson, Cal., exclusively on HBO. The HBO Sports team of Jim Lampley, Larry Merchant and Emanuel Steward will be ringside for the fight, which will be available in HDTV, closed-captioned for the hearing-impaired and presented in Spanish on HBO Latino.

Headlining the inaugural boxing event at The Home Depot Center’s 27,000-seat soccer stadium, Los Angeles native Oscar De La Hoya (38-5, 30 KOs) will fight live on HBO’s flagship boxing series for the first time since 2001. Coming off the highest-grossing fight in history – his showdown with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in May 2007 – the six-division world champion will be making his 31st appearance on HBO, hoping to thrill the fans who have supported him since his amateur days in East Los Angeles. The fight also marks the return of Floyd Mayweather Sr. to the De La Hoya corner as head trainer.

Steve Forbes (33-5, 9 KOs), from Las Vegas by way of Portland, Ore., is coming off a split-decision victory over the highly touted Francisco Bojado last October. A former super featherweight champion and finalist on “The Contender, who has never been knocked down in 11 years as a professional, Forbes will be making his HBO debut under the tutelage of Mayweather Sr.’s brother, Jeff Mayweather.

Loew Slaps Calzaghe, Lockett

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

YOUNGSTOWN, OH (April 30, 2008) — JACK LOEW, trainer of world middleweight champion KELLY “The Ghost” PAVLIK, read with great interest the remarks made earlier this week by Gary “The Rocket” Lockett, the No. 1 contender who will be challenging Pavlik for the title in June.

“I see where Lockett has become inspired by Joe Calzaghe’s victory over Bernard Hopkins in his U.S. debut and is predicting the same result against Kelly. Maybe Enzo Calzaghe can teach Lockett to slap like a girl — just like Joe,” said Loew.

“You can get away with that style of fighting against a 43-year-old geezer, but don’t try that against Kelly. That’s how rockets crash and burn. Kelly is having a camp that is second to none. We didn’t work this hard to win the title just to have Lockett and his troubadour trainer take it away from us. Kelly is going to launch Lockett back to Wales…without a plane.”

Pavlik (33-0, 29 KOs), from Youngstown, OH, makes his first title defense against mandatory challenger Lockett (30-1, 21 KOs), from Cwmbran, Wales, Saturday, June 7, at Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall. Promoted by Top Rank, in association with Frank Warren’s Sports Network and Caesars Atlantic City, the Pavlik-Lockett world middleweight championship will be broadcast live on HBO World Championship Boxing, beginning at 9:35 p.m. EDT / 6:35 p.m. PDT in the U.S.

Hallback/Garside Should Be Good

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

ALBUQUERQUE (April 29, 2008) – Four-time world champion Chevelle “Fists of Steel Hallback (26-5-2, 11 KOs) is one of the most recognizable, experienced and respected woman boxer in the world.

Her June 13 showdown against WIBA featherweight champion Jeannine “G9 Garside (7-0-1, 3 KOs) in the 10-round co-feature feature for the vacant International Female Boxers Association (IFBA) lightweight championship on the “Finally pay-per-view event, airing live (10 PM/ET-8 PM/MT) from Isleta Casino & Resort in Albuquerque, not only figures to be a candidate for Fight of the Night, it also has all the makings of a female version of Gatti-Ward.

“Finally, promoted by Fresquez Productions, Inc., will be produced and distributed by Integrated Sports for live viewing in the United States and Canada (10 PM/ET) on both cable and satellite pay-per-view via iN Demand, TVN, Shaw Communications, DirecTV, Bell Expressvue and StarChoice for a suggested retail price of only $24.95.

The greatest collection of women boxers on one show with all eight independently rated among the world’s top 3 by divisions, including five No. 1 rated fighters, will battle in four world title bouts on “Finally. The main event features the top two women boxers in the world today, Albuquerque favorite Holly “The Preacher’s Daughter Holm (21-1-2, 6 KOs), recognized as the No. 1 welterweight in the world, versus the world’s No. 1 middleweight, Detroit icon Mary Jo Sanders (25-0, 8 KOs), fighting in the 10-round main event for the vacant IFBA junior middleweight crown and pound-for-pound supremacy.

The No. 1 ranked lightweight, WIBA and IBA title-holder Hallback, of Tampa, and WIBA champion Garside, the world’s No. 1 rated featherweight from Ontario, agree that their fight will steal the “Finally thunder and the PPV event will take women’s boxing to another level.

“We fought on the same card once but I didn’t see her fight, Hallback said of Garside. “I know she has a big heart and can really fight. I may have more pro fights, but she had a lot of amateur fights, and I didn’t have one. Experience-wise, we’re even or she may even have a little more experience. She’s coming to fight and I am, too. Our styles help us put on a show for fans. We’re both very exciting fighters. It’s going to be like the 4th of July in June. We’re going to be a tough act to follow for the main event. Jeannine’s coming prepared to win and prove that she’s one of the best. So am I. This fight will go down in the history books. In 10 years, boxing fans will be talking about Hallback-Garside.

“There are a lot of good, quality fighters – some of the best females in the world – on this pay-per-view card. I’m excited to be fighting on it. It’s important that mainstream watches so women’s boxing gets to the next level. We belong on prime time TV. I’m excited to be part of it.

Hallback is one of only five boxers to fight Holm and Sanders, dropping 10-round decisions to both. “Holm-Sanders isn’t going to be like my fight with Garside, Chevelle noted. “Their fight is between good boxers with some power. It’s going to be a chess match. Holly moves a lot, Mary Jo doesn’t move as much. I pushed both fights, pressuring them throughout. I think it’s going to be a close match between two good fighters.

Also on PPV, IBA junior featherweight champion Wendy Rodriguez (18-4, 3 KOs), of Los Angeles, faces WIBF-GBU/WIBC minimumweight title-holder Hollie “Hot Stuff Dunaway (21-6, 10 KOs), fighting out of Las Vegas by way of (Van Buren) Arkansas, in a 10-round bout for vacant IBA strawweight title; WBC 2007 Fighter of the Year, WBC mininumweight champ Carina “La Reina Moreno (11-1, 5 KOs), of Watsonville (CA), meets WIBA flyweight title-holder Eileen “The Hawaiian Mongoose Olszewski (5-0-1), fighting out of New York City by way of Honolulu, in a 10-round fight for the IFBA junior flyweight crown. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

Tickets, priced at $50.00, $100.00, $150.00, $200.00, $350.00 and $500.00, go on sale March 18 at the Isleta Casino and Resort box office, www.tickets.com or at Fresquez Productions, Inc. (508.884.7484). For more information go to www.fresquezproductions.com or www.holmvssanders.com. Doors open at 5:30 PM/MT, first bout 7:00 PM/MT, first televised bout 8:00 PM/MT.

Fight Fans, we’ll get started shortly. The Victor Ortiz v. Dairo Esalas fight just ended in spectacular fashion via 5th round KO. With the KO victory Ortiz improved to 21 wins with 16 KOs against one draw and a loss.
_____________________________________________________
On Saturday May 3rd, Oscar De La Hoya will square off against former world champion Steve “2 Pounds? Forbes at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Ca. TSS will be ringside to bring you blow-by-blow coverage as the action unfolds.

We know what you’re thinking: a DLH victory is a foregone conclusion. But how many of you gave Carlos Quintana a shot to dethrone welterweight champion Paul Williams earlier this year? Or how many of you had Nate Campbell beating previously undefeated lightweight champion Juan Diaz in March? Anything can happen when two men put on the gloves and on Saturday May 3rd it just might.

The Golden Boy. What can we tell you about Oscar De La Hoya that you don’t already know? Born and raised in East Los Angeles, DLH began boxing at the age of six. Inspired by the tragic loss of his mother, he won gold at the 1992 Olympic games in Barcelona, Spain. In only his twelfth professional fight DLH became a world champion when he captured the WBO Super Featherweight title. A six-division champion from junior featherweight to middleweight, he has bested champions and legends. Established during the prime of his career, DLH and partners built Golden Boy Promotions into one of the leading promotional companies in boxing. Now, at age 35, DLH wants to go out on top. To do so he must first defeat former lightweight champion Steve Forbes.

2 Pounds. On December 3, 2000 Steve Forbes stopped John “The Eastern Beast? Brown to capture the vacant IBF Super Featherweight title; a title he defended once and then lost to the scales in August 2002. In 2004 Forbes began campaigning as a junior welterweight and over the next two years strung together five consecutive victories. That’s when ESPN’s TV reality show The Contender came calling. Knowing the 2006 tournament would be contested at 150 lbs., Forbes bulked up to face career welterweights and junior middleweights, including Kassim Ouma conqueror Cornelius Bundrage. Forbes fought his way to the finals where he met Grady Brewer at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. In facing Brewer, Forbes confronted a 5’10? junior middleweight with a 72? reach, measurements eerily similar to DLH. Though Forbes lost the ten round tilt via split decision, he worked his way back into prominence. In 2007 Forbes was twice pitted against Golden Boy fighters. And though he officially won one contest and lost the other, many ringside observers agree he dominated both fights.

TSS faithful join us here fight night, Saturday May 3rd for round by round coverage of the Oscar De La Hoya v. Steve Forbes fight beginning at approximately 10:00pm ET / 7:00pm PT.

Banner Signs Vets, Prospects

TO PROMOTIONAL CONTRACTS

Banner Promotions president Art Pelullo has signed five fighters – IBO featherweight world champion Cristobal Cruz, and four prospects, Ruslan Provodnikov, Orlando Lora, Maxim Vlasov, and Ji-hoon Kim – to promotional contracts.

Art said, “I think all of these boxers have a lot of talent and determination, and the potential to become world champions. I’m looking forward to working with all of them.

IBO featherweight world champion Cristobal Cruz, 36-11-1 with 23 knockouts, of Tijuana, B.C., Mexico, who is co-promoted by Golden Gloves Promotions, is coming off a sensational win in his last fight on March 7.

After the fight, Fightwriter.com’s Graham Houston reported, “Toughness, tenacity and a CompuBox punch record for a 12-round fight carried Tijuana veteran Cristobal Cruz to a bitterly hard-fought majority decision win over highly regarded South African Thomas Mashaba in an upset on Friday Night Fights.

“This was a terrific fight, almost non-stop action. A clear underdog, Cruz fought with a winner’s attitude, going right at Mashaba and throwing punch after punch from all directions, body and head, around the sides and up through the middle.

“Back and forth they went, but Cruz was often having the last word, seeming to throw six or seven punches after getting hit by two or three.

“Fights such as this are great for boxing – 12 intense and exciting rounds, the issue in doubt to the very end, with a veteran journeyman gritting out a surprise win over a world-class fighter adding a feel-good factor.â€?

The four prospects will fight on the undercard of the Chris Byrd-Shaun George main event at the Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas on May 16:

Ruslan Provodnikov – 7-0 with 6 knockouts, of Ekaterinburg, Russia; 24 years old, 5’6 tall, 140 pounds. Ruslan, who is co-promoted by German Titov of Titov Box Promotion, is scheduled to open the May 16 ESPN show.

Maxim Vlasov – 11-0 with 3 knockouts, of Tolyatti, Russia; 21 years old, 6’3 tall, 168 pounds. Vlasov is co-promoted by Rinat Yusupov.

Orlando “Olimpico Lora – 20-0-1 with 15 knockouts, of Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico; 27 years old, 5’10 tall, 140 pounds.

Ji-hoon Kim – 13-5 with 10 knockouts, of Goyang, Korea; 21 years old, 5’9 tall, 130 pounds.

Kim will fight Koba Gogoladze, 20-2 with 8 knockouts, in the co-featured bout. The opponents for Lora, Provodnikov, and Vlasov are to be announced.

Dirrell/Hanshaw On Showtime

Friday, April 25th, 2008

SANTA YNEZ, CALIF. (April 25, 2008) – In a match-up of top super middleweight prospects, undefeated 2004 Olympic bronze medalist Andre Dirrell (14-0, nine KOs) will take on once-beaten Anthony Hanshaw (21-1-1, 14 KOs) in a 10-round showdown Next Friday! May 2, live on SHOWTIME (ShoBox: The New Generation, 11 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the west coast).

In the co-feature, the promising and once-beaten Antonio DeMarco (18-1-1, 13 KOs) will take on undefeated Juan Castaneda (12-0, nine KOs) in an eight-round lightweight bout.

The SHOWTIME event will be promoted by Gary Shaw Productions, LLC and originate from the Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, Calif.

Remaining tickets, priced at $25, $40, $55, $75 and $95, can be purchased at the Chumash Casino Resort box office. To charge by phone call 1-800-585-3737. To purchase online go to: http://premier.ticketsplus.net/TicketsPlus/pipeline/ticketselect.asp?nt=MISEVTs07&sc=MISEVTs07.

Dirrell, who won the bronze medal at the 2004 Olympic Games, will continue his recent step-up in opposition. The hard-hitting southpaw is coming off of a third-round TKO over Shannon Miller on Feb. 1, 2008.

According to Dirrell’s trainer and grandfather, Leon Lawson, the former Olympian and 24-year-old Flint, Mich., native is ready for the next step.

“Andre has looked good with everyone he steps in the ring with, said Lawson, who also trains Andre’s brother and fellow undefeated super middleweight prospect, Anthony. “He has been sparring with the best, and I know he can fight with the best.

In June 2007, Dirrell faced his toughest opponent to date when he scored a 10-round unanimous decision over fellow prospect Curtis Stevens on national television. The fans and many at ringside voiced their displeasure at the lack of action throughout the contest.

“A lot of the fans know that wasn’t me, but people are going to criticize, Dirrell said. “I can understand how everybody felt about the fight, but that wasn’t me that night. They will see a lot better performance from me this time.

Dirrell has studied Hanshaw’s fights on tape in preparation for their upcoming bout.

“I am just going to keep Hanshaw on the outside and put my punches together, Dirrell said. “I will come out with a pretty good outcome and a really good, crowd-pleasing performance. Just look out for a new Andre.

Currently training at the Police Athletic League Gym in Winter Haven, Fla., Dirrell praised his upcoming opponent.

“Hanshaw is a good fighter. I have known him since the amateurs, and remember that he won five or six Ohio State Fair championships. Nobody else had done that. He is going to be my toughest opponent yet. There is no doubt about it.

Hanshaw, a once-beaten legitimate prospect of Warren, Ohio, has an impressive training regimen of his own. He has been training in Houston, Texas, with 2003 World Boxing Hall of Fame Trainer of the Year Ronnie Shields.

Despite the fact that his upcoming opponent won a bronze medal at the 2004 Olympics, Hanshaw said that his resume is more impressive.

“Dirrell is up and coming, but he is going to be a little bit too small, Hanshaw said. “I am going to be too strong for him, especially with me coming back down from light heavyweight to my natural weight.

“Dirrell is a runner, but I’m going to be right on him. He still fights like an amateur. After I slow him down with the body shots, I’ll knock him out in the sixth or seventh round.

Under the tutelage of Shields, the 30-year-old Hanshaw is in good company. The former three-time light welterweight Golden Glove Champion has trained Mike Tyson, Vernon Forrest, Pernell Whitaker and Evander Holyfield.

“Shields and I have been working on what we are going to do, and I’m going to be right there in Dirrell’s face, Hanshaw said. “It is going to be a hell of a fight. I am going to take him out of there.

“Being trained by a guy like Ronnie gives me extra motivation. Knowing that he was worked with some of the best fighters in history makes me push it even harder. He is a hell of a trainer.

A good judge of talent, Shields knows that Hanshaw has the skills to move to the next level.

“Hanshaw has a lot of potential, he always has, said the talented Shields. “The thing is you have to bring it out of him. That’s what we are trying to do now.

“Of course I’m confident that he has the abilities to beat Dirrell. Andre moves a lot and is a sneaky counter puncher, but I think Hanshaw is the bigger stronger guy and he should be able to impose his will. Dirrell wants to move, but Hanshaw will make him exchange punches.

Shields knows that this is an important fight for Hanshaw, especially coming off of a loss to Roy Jones, Jr.

“Dirrell is a good fighter and this is a big step up, Shields said. “Outside of Roy Jones, this is the biggest fight of his career. Hanshaw is focused and ready to prove that he has what it takes to become a champion.

The sole blemish on Hanshaw’s record is a decision loss to future Boxing Hall of Famer Jones, Jr., on July 14, 2007. Hanshaw was impressive in the bout, which was fought at 175 pounds.

Play-by-play announcer Nick Charles and expert analyst/boxing historian Steve Farhood will call the action from ringside. The executive producer of ShoBox is Gordon Hall with Richard Gaughan producing and Rick Phillips directing.

Guzman Gets Visa

Friday, April 25th, 2008

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (April 25, 2008) – World Boxing Organization (WBO) Junior Lightweight Champion Joan Guzman (28-0, 17 KOs) has obtained a visa that will allow him to travel to Scotland to defend his title against interim champion and Scotland-native Alex Arthur.

“This was the last hurdle that we needed to clear before we could make our title defense, Guzman said. “Now we’re just waiting on the new date.

The fight was scheduled for Saturday, May 3 at Meadowbank Sports Centre in Edinburgh, Scotland, but due to Guzman’s visa issues, the fight will now have a new date.

“All we need now is for Frank Warren (promoter) of Sports Network to give us the new, rescheduled date, said Sean Gibbons, matchmaker for Sycuan Ringside Promotions, the company that promotes Guzman. “Guzman cleared up his visa issues and is now ready to go to Scotland to successfully defend his WBO junior lightweight belt.

Frank Warren won the rights to this championship fight in a WBO purse bid.
