Andre Ward Surgery Info

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

Los Angeles, CA (August 20, 2008) — 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist and top-10 world rated Andre S.O.G. Ward has just released a statement today that on Friday, August 8 at around 6 AM (PST) he underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee.

Dr. Warren King, who has operated on many top athletes, and is also affiliated with the Oakland Raiders, San Jose Sharks and the San Francisco Giants, performed the surgery at Fremont Medical Center.

Warren says the operation was a complete success and that Ward should be able to resume training within 6 to 8 weeks. Andre has been undergoing rehab at Ather Nova Care under the supervision of Dr. Donald Chu, and is currently focusing on upper body and core training.

In order to respect the doctor’s wishes, Ward and his team plan to schedule a fight as soon as late 2008 to early 2009.

“As a Christian, I have to look at my situation from a spiritual standpoint,” stated Andre. “I know God has a plan in this. He knows better than me what’s up ahead, I trust him 100 percent with my life and career. It is not a setback but a setup for what is to come. I am hungry for not only a world title, but for the opportunity to become a reigning champion, I will come back stronger!”

Remillard In Tougher Aug. 29

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (August 20, 2008) – Up until this past Monday, unbeaten WBC Youth featherweight title-holder Matt “Sharp Shooter” Remillard (14-0, 7 KOs) was scheduled to fight WBC Continental Americas featherweight champion Adalberto “Terrible” Borquez (18-6, 17 KOs) on August 29 in “Title Wave,” live on ESPN Friday Night Fights from Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Remillard, fighting out of nearby Manchester (CT), is now taking on 2-time world title challenger Antonio “T-Rex” Davis (26-4, 13 KOs) in the 10-round co-feature for the vacant WBC USNBC featherweight championship.

“I don’t mind,” Remillard discussed his change of opponent. “It won’t affect me because we’re so close to the fight and I’m prepared to go 10 or more hard rounds. I fight whoever they put in front of me. It’s a shame Adalberto pulled out. I’ve been looking forward to fighting him and preparing for his style. All I needed was one day to tweak the difference in their styles. I think it’s much more important for me to be in shape to go 10 hard rounds than who I’m fighting.

“I’ve fought twice before on ESPN, but in swing bouts, not scheduled like this one. It’s a big deal. Everybody watches ESPN Friday Night Fights. I’ve got a foot in the door but a win August 29th against Davis will open more doors and help get my name out there nationally. Everybody he’s (Davis) lost to have been world champion, fought for the world title, or is contending to fight for a world title.”

In his last fight 11 months ago, Davis lost a 12-round decision to WBO featherweight title-holder Steven Luevano. Antonio’s other losses included a 12-round decision to WBO super featherweight champion Joan Guzman, as well as to former title challenger Koba Gogaladze by 12-round majority decision. The only time Davis has been stopped was in his fifth pro fight to Edner Cherry, who fights WBC light welterweight champ Timothy Bradley for his belt on September 13.

“Davis started his pro career late when he was 29,” Remillard continued. “Sometimes a long amateur career takes a beating on a fighter’s body but, so far, Davis has done well for his age (36) and obviously he’s taken good care of his body. Some younger fighters have underestimated him thinking that, due to his age, he’s slower than he really is. I’m taking him seriously, though, preparing to fight him at his peak, not thinking about his age at all.”

NABF cruiserweight champion Matt “Too Smooth” Godfrey defends his NABF cruiserweight title against Emmanuel Nwodo in the 12-round main event headlining “Title Wave,” promoted by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc. Providence native Godfrey (16-1, 9 KOs) is rated No. 5 by the WBC, while Nigerian-born Nwodo (22-4, 18 KOs) is a former USBA champion currently rated No. 12 by the WBA and No. 14 by the WBC.

Also fighting on the card in a Special Heavyweight Attraction, 2004 U.S. Olympian Jason “Big Six” Estrada (11-1, 2 KOs), of Providence, continues his mission in the heavyweight division against Texas State champion Domonic Jenkins (13-8-1, 6 KOs).

Ledyard’s (CT) undefeated super middleweight Brian Macy (4-0, 1 KO), 2000 National PAL champion and U. of Connecticut graduate, meets Shawn Kirk (4-2, 2 KOs) in a four-round bout. Light heavyweight Keith Kozlin makes his pro debut in a four-round bout versus Borngard Washington (0-3).

Hartford’s popular welterweight Addy Irizarry (5-2, 2 KOs) meets her toughest challenge to date in former world champion Yvonne “Silk” Reiss (7-12-1), while Mystic (CT) super bantamweight Karen Dulin (0-1) faces Christina Leadbeater (1-1, 1 KO) in a pair of four-round, female bouts. Two additional bouts are being finalized. All fighters and bouts are subject to change.

Tickets for “Title Wave” are priced at $30.00, $45.00, $75.00 and $100.00 and available to purchase by calling CES (401.724.2253/2254), going on line at www.cesboxing.com or www.mohegansun.com, at the Mohegan Sun box office or any TicketMaster outlet.

TICKETS GO ON SALE TUESDAY, AUGUST 19 FOR

“SUPER” JOE CALZAGHE vs. “SUPERMAN” ROY JONES

NOVEMBER 8 SUPERBOUT AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN

NEW YORK (August 18, 2008) – Tickets for the highly anticipated superfight between “Super” Joe Calzaghe and “Superman” Roy Jones, set for November 8, 2008 at Madison Square Garden, will go on sale Tuesday, August 19 at 12 Noon. The Ring Magazine light heavyweight belt will be at stake when these two legends step between the ropes for their 12-round bout. Calzaghe vs. Jones will be presented by Square Ring, Inc. and Calzaghe Promotions in association with Madison Square Garden and will be produced and distributed by HBO Pay-Per-View.

Tickets, priced at $1500, $1000, $750, $500, $250 and $150, will be available at the Garden Box Office, all Ticketmaster outlets or online at ticketmaster.com.

“I am looking forward to fighting one of the great legends of the sport at the Mecca of Boxing, Madison Square Garden,” said Calzaghe, who will be fighting for the first time in New York. “I am sure the many thousands of fans who will travel to support me will make it a truly memorable evening and I will not let them down.”

“I’ve always fought well at Madison Square Garden,” said Jones. “After all, it’s the Mecca of sports arenas, which has as much history and tradition as Yankee Stadium or Chicago’s Wrigley Field. It’s an honor to fight in the same building as many other greats have including Sugar Ray Robinson, Muhammad Ali, Floyd Patterson, Joe Louis, Max Baer, Jake LaMotta, Joe Frazier, George Foreman and so many others. I’m looking forward to fighting in a historic place that I’m very comfortable in and have never lost. The fans that come to these fights are not only knowledgeable, they create a lot of noise. It’s the best venue for my fight with Calzaghe.”

“We are excited to host the much anticipated Joe Calzaghe versus Roy Jones fight as we continue to offer the very best to our loyal New York area boxing fans,” said Joel Fisher, executive vice president, MSG Sports Properties. “Both fighters are World Champions and will certainly add to the long standing boxing tradition at Madison Square Garden.”

Joe Calzaghe (45-0, 32 KOs) from Newbridge, Wales, United Kingdom is the reigning World Boxing Association (WBA) and World Boxing Organization (WBO) super middleweight champion and is boxing’s longest reigning world champion. Joe won the WBO championship on October 11, 1997, added the IBF title on March 4, 2006 against Jeff Lacy and the WBA title on November 3, 2007 against Mikkel Kessler in front of 50,000 at Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales. But perhaps Calzaghe’s biggest win of his career came in his last fight, a unanimous decision win against former Undisputed World Middleweight Champion Bernard Hopkins on April 19, 2008. The win over Hopkins established Calzaghe as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world.

Roy Jones (52-4, 38 KOs) from Pensacola, FL, dominated Felix “Tito” Trinidad in his most recent fight, winning a unanimous decision at the Garden on January 19, 2008. This will be Jones’ sixth bout at the Garden (three of which were in the now WaMu Theater) and was victorious in each, winning three by knockout and two by unanimous decision. Jones is a former middleweight, super middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight champion. For well over a decade, he was known as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world and was virtually unstoppable. Jones’ win over Trinidad gives him the opportunity to fight a man who is now at the top of most pound-for-pound lists, and a win over Joe Calzaghe on November 8 will return him to the summit once again.

The Calzaghe vs. Jones pay-per-view telecast, beginning at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT, will be produced and distributed by HBO Pay-Per-View and will be available to more than 71 million pay-per-view homes. The telecast will be available in HD-TV for those viewers who can receive HD. HBO Pay-Per-View is the leading supplier of event programming to the pay-per-view industry. Turner Offers To Fight For Free

Sunday, August 17th, 2008

Louis Turner is so convinced that he will march into Atlanta and defeat Anthony Greenidge on August 30, that he’s willing to forego his paycheck if the evening ends in any other result.

“If I can not beat this clown, I do not want to get paid” insists middleweight prospect Louis Turner (12-1), who faces Greenidge at the Holiday Inn Select in Atlanta, GA, with the vacant NABC middleweight title at stake.

“If I don’t win, do not pay me!”

Naturally, the remark didn’t go unchecked.

“This guy is a nut case if he thinks he is going to beat me,” states Anthony Greenidge (11-1), a regular on the A-Town circuit. “He might as well get ready to go home with a broke behind and broke bank account.”

KO KINGS BOXING will promote the North American Boxing Council (NABC) Middleweight Title, which tops a full night of action at the Holiday Inn Select in beautiful downtown Atlanta, GA, within walking distance of Turner Field, home of the Atlanta Braves.

This show will be aired live on the internet via the website www.kokings.net. This show will be shown free to members that join the site.

Anthony Greenidge, promoted by KO KINGS BOXING, turned pro on May 13, 2006 and went on an eight-fight winning streak before losing to spoiler journeyman, Antonio Baker.

After suffering the first loss of his career, Greenidge went on a 3 fight winning streak. Two of Greenidge’s most impressive victories were over Brad Austin and slick veteran Shannon Miller.

“It is not possible for Louis Turner to beat me,” insists a very confident Greenidge. “He is too slow and I am too slick for him. I will dominate the fight and clearly win.”

Anthony Greenidge is trained by Robert Rene and trains out of Orlando, Florida at Rene’s Dynmaic Sports Center in Orlando, Florida.

Louis Turner, who is promoted by Don King Promotions, turned pro on August 13, 2005. He went on an 11-fight winning streak, before losing a tough fight to veteran Angel Hernandez.

“I will stop this kid. He will not last the full 8 rounds,” boasts Turner, who possesses legitimate one-punch power. “Greenidge fights a lot in Atlanta and I cannot leave it to the judges. I will win by KO so there will not be any questions.”

States Ed Hutchinson, President of the NABC: “The NABC is proud to have such talented young boxers fighting for our World Middleweight Title. This will be an exciting fight and we encourage everyone to go to the fight live in Atlanta or watch it live on the internet by joining kokings.net.”

World class trainer, Floyd Mayweather Sr., and four-time world champion, Vernon Forrest, have both agreed to attend and be the guest fight analyst for the show, which only lends to the significance of the event.

The fight card will also feature the following undercard bouts:

“Pretty Boy” Michael Jean Louis (4-0) meets Miguel Alfaro in a welterweight contest scheduled for six rounds or less.

“The African Psycho” Daniel Sackey will battle veteran spoiler Marcos Primera in a scheduled six-round light heavyweight showdown.

“The Truth” Charmaine Carrington tangles with Kimberly Harris in a four-round female bout.

Former Olympic Trial Finalist “Busy Bee” Brad Solomon anxiously awaits his next victim to be named for his scheduled six-round junior middleweight contest.

IBF FEATHERWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP FIGHT

Banner Promotions president Art Pelullo and Golden Gloves president Rodney Berman won the purse bid for the vacant International Boxing Federation featherweight world championship fight between Cristobal Cruz and Orlando Salido.

Cristobal Cruz of Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico, has a professional record of 36-11-1 with 23 knockouts. He is ranked number three by the IBF in the featherweight division, and is the former WBC Continental Americas featherweight champion, WBC FECARBOX featherweight champion, and WBC CABOFE featherweight champion.

He recently won the IBO featherweight world title from defending champion Thomas Mashaba of Soweto, South Africa. Cristobal broke the Compubox record for the number of punches thrown in a featherweight bout in the fight, which was the main event of ESPN’s Friday Night Fights on March 7, 2008, at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut.

Seldon has been calling out Johnson for some time now and Johnson has seemingly had enough. Don King to Announce Plans for Boxing Event

In Chengdu, China, during 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing

Proceeds Pledged to Rebuild City after Devastating Earthquake

BEIJING, China (Aug. 12, 2008)—Legendary promoter Don King arrived in Beijing, China, today (Tuesday) and will be holding a press conference here on Wednesday (Aug. 13) where he will announce his plans to promote a boxing event in Chengdu, China. The boxing card will be staged in November and is planned to be presented at the Chengdu National Stadium.

After the Beijing press conference, the China Boxing Association has invited King to attend Olympic boxing.

King and the Chinese government pledged to donate part of the proceeds of the boxing event to help rebuild Chengdu, which was devastated by an earthquake in May. King will visit Chengdu and host a press conference there with the city’s Mayor Ge Lin on Thursday (Aug. 15).

King has been to China before. He promoted in Beijing what was to have been the third meeting between then World Boxing Association heavyweight champion John “The Quietman” Ruiz and former four-time heavyweight champion Evander “The Real Deal” Holyfield on Aug. 5, 2001.

The fight—with King and both fighters in Beijing preparing for the match—was postponed just nine days prior to the event after John Ruiz sustained a neck injury that forced him to withdraw.

King’s presence in China drew positive attention to the country, especially in the sports world, which was appreciated by the Chinese as officials were vying to become the host of the 2008 Olympic Games at the time. King was particularly outspoken in his support of China’s Olympic bid.
