Regarding Pacman’s Title

Saturday, September 20th, 2008

Armando Santa Cruz of the United States will fight Antonio Pitalúa of Mexico tonight in Monterrey, México, in a WBC lightweight final elimination bout to determine the division’s mandatory challenger. The fight is being promoted by Golden Boy Promotions, and is the first fight card in a series titled “Next Boxing Generation” to be televised on HBO Plus.

The WBC has accepted to sanction a WBC lightweight interim championship due to the fact that WBC lightweight world champion Manny Pacquiao of the Philippines is committed to fight Oscar de la Hoya of the United States on December 6, and will not defend his title for a long time.

The winner of Santa Cruz vs. Pitalúa fight will face WBC number one ranked lightweight contender Edwin Valero of Venezuela in the interim championship fight by the end of the year.

UFC Fundraiser Is Planned

Friday, September 19th, 2008

New York, NY, September 19, 2008 – The Ultimate Fighting Championship® and Spike TV have joined forces to present “UFC Fight For The Troops™”, a special three-hour live televised event on Wednesday, December 10 starting at 9:00 PM, ET to raise funds to build a treatment center for the brave men and women in the United States Armed Forces who have experienced traumatic brain injuries. The facility is being sponsored, built and equipped by the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund. The announcement was made today by Dana White, UFC President and Kevin Kay, Spike TV President.

The goal of “UFC Fight For The Troops” is to raise the necessary funds for The National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE), an advanced research facility in Bethseda, MD dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of military personnel and veterans suffering from traumatic brain injury (TBI) and psychological health issues.

“With this event on December 10th, we hope to raise millions for the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund and to help increase national awareness for the meaningful ways the National Intrepid Center of Excellence will impact the lives of our service personnel here in the United States,” said White.

“Spike TV has the deepest respect and admiration for the men and women who put their lives on the line for us every day,” said Kay. “Spike TV is proud to be a part of raising
funds to build this world class state of the art research and physical rehabilitation facility where active duty personnel and veterans with traumatic brain injuries can receive the best medical care this country has to offer – we owe them no less.”

More information about the facility, including ways to donate, can be found online at http://www.fallenheroesfund.org or by calling 1-800-340 HERO.

Spike TV will telecast “UFC Fight For The Troops” live from Fort Bragg, NC, Wednesday, December 10 from 9:00 PM – Midnight, ET. The event will feature a full UFC fight card as well as celebrity appearances and an all-star lineup of UFC fighters. A phone bank in Los Angeles will also be created where donors can interact with the celebrities and UFC fighters answering phones. Further details on appearances and event information will be released soon.

New York, NY, September 17, 2008 – Spike TV will present an “Octoberfest” of UFC programming with rebroadcasts of UFC 86 on Saturday, October 4 at 9:00pm ET/PT, featuring a light heavyweight championship bout between Rampage Jackson and Forrest Griffin, and UFC 87, headlined by Georges St. Pierre’s first defense of the welterweight title in a matchup with Jon Fitch, on Saturday, October 11 at 9:00pm ET/PT. The special telecasts will lead up to Spike’s presentation of UFC 89 from Birmingham, England on Saturday, October 18 at 9:00pm ET/PT.

The July 4th weekend title fight at UFC 86 between “The Ultimate Fighter 7” coaches, UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and top contender Forrest Griffin, featured plenty of fireworks. For the first time on cable, UFC fans will get a chance to witness the five-round war which completed Griffin’s four-year journey from Georgia police officer to UFC champion. The telecast of the entire live fight card will also feature outstanding performances by “The Ultimate Fighter” alums Joe “Daddy” Stevenson and Josh Koscheck.

At UFC 87, Georges St. Pierre defended his welterweight title against rising star Jon Fitch, cementing his position as one of the best fighters in the world. However, it was Brock Lesner’s first dominating performance in the Octagon in front of his hometown Minneapolis fans against veteran Heath Herring that left the crowd abuzz. Unfortunately for the Minnesota faithful, local product and lightweight contender, Roger Huerta, lost a hard-fought decision to Kenny Florian in a battle of two of the lightweight division’s elite performers.

Spike TV heads across the Atlantic Ocean for the third time to telecast a UFC fight card, with middleweights “The Ultimate Fighter 3” champ Michael Bisping and “The Ultimate Fighter 1” standout Chris Leben headlining on Saturday, October 18 at 9:00pm ET/PT (same-day tape delay) from The National Indoor Arena in Birmingham, England. UFC 89 will also include two action-packed co-feature bouts with four of the top contenders in the light heavyweight division. Lyoto Machida and Thiago Silva, both undefeated, will square off in the Octagon®, with the winner on the cusp of a title shot. “The Ultimate Fighter 2” alum Keith Jardine, looking to rebound from a loss to Wanderlai Silva, takes on veteran Brandon “The Truth” Vera, who is 1-0 since moving down in weight class.

Spike TV is available in 96.1 million homes and is a division of MTV Networks. A unit of Viacom (NYSE: VIA, VIA.B), MTV Networks is one of the world’s leading creators of programming and content across all media platforms. NY Hvywt Title Up For Grabs Sept. 26

Friday, September 19th, 2008

NEW YORK CITY (September 19, 2008) – Long Island bragging rights will be on the line September 26, when New York State heavyweight champion Darrell Madison squares off against Elfair “The Wyandanch Warrior” McKnight, in the six-round co-feature on “Havoc At The Hilton.”

Polish power punching light middleweight Pawel “Raging Bull” Wolak (21-1, 14 KOs) headlines “Havoc At The Hilton,” promoted by Bob Duffy’s Ring Promotions, against former WBF title challenger Chad Greenleaf (10-10-1, 4 KOs) at the Huntington Hilton Hotel. Pro Active Boxing, Co. is one of the sponsors.

Madison (10-1, 3 KOs), three-time New York Golden Gloves champion fighting out of Central Islip, rides a nine-fight win streak into his turf war showdown against four-time New York Golden Gloves titlist McKnight (2-7-2), who hails from Wyandanch.

“It’s a hometown rivalry,” Madison describes his fight against McKnight. “He was the man – four-time Golden Gloves champion — when I was in the amateur. I used to tell Elfair that someday I was going to beat him and he’d say he’d kill me. I’m going to take the Long Island heavyweight torch from him on September 26th. We know each other and owe this fight to each other. He is one very tough guy who fought Yacoubou Moutakilou, two-time National amateur champion, almost an Olympian, in his sixth pro fight and Kevin Johnson in his seventh. He’s no slouch.”

Madison has been one of Guillermo Jones’ sparring partners at Don King’s training camp in Ohio. “Camp has been real good,” Madison explained. “Guillermo has a fight September 27 in Germany. I’ve been improving my punching co-ordination, ring generalship and patience as I step-up each fight. In a 1 ½-2 years, I hope to be mentioned in the top 10. I want more power into my shots and improve by knockout ratio. I want to show people that I’m the complete package – I can box and punch.”

On the undercard, hometown Plainview favorite welterweight Tommy “The Razor” Raione (11-1, 3 KOs) faces Henry White, Jr. (2-2-1, 2 KOs) in a six-round bout. Brooklyn light heavyweight Will Rosinsky (1-0, 1 KO), three-time U.S. National Golden Gloves champion, will be showcased in a four-rounder against upset-minded Michael “The Snake” Ciccone (1-4).

In a four-round heavyweight match, Egyptian-born Ahmed Samir (2-0) takes on tough Andrew “Came To Fight” Hutchinson (2-9-2). Samir was 198-13 as an amateur, 85-10 in international matches, including gold-medal performances in the 2007 All-African Games, 2007 Arab Championships and 2006 Jordan International Championships. Ahmed came to the U.S. to participate in the 2007 World Amateur Championships, but he abandoned the Egyptian national Team to turn pro and start a new life in Brooklyn.

Also on the undercard in four-round bouts, Patchogue welterweight Leon Green (4-1, 1 KO) meets Rakeem Carter (0-4), of Albany; welterweight Chris Algeri (3-0, 2 KOs) fights fellow New Yorker Clarence Smith (0-1); Brooklyn light welterweight Pablo Tejeda (2-8-1) returns against Broderick Antoine (3-6-1, 2 KOs), of Troy (NY); Albany middleweight Andy Mejias (2-0, 1 KO) tangles with Karl Desravines (1-0), of Brooklyn .

Light middleweight Lambros Karaolides, fighting out of Astoria Queens, is scheduled to make his pro debut against TBA. All bouts and fighters are subject to change.

Tickets are priced at $100.00 (Golden Ringside), $75.00 (Ringside) and $40.00 (General Admission). VIP tables of 10 are $1500. To purchase tickets go to www.ringpromotions.com or call 516.313.2304. Doors open at 6:30 PM, first bout at 7:30 PM.

Urango vs. Ngoudjo For IBF 140 Title

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

Montréal, September, 18, 2008 : After dropping a controversial decision in his first attempt at a world title, Montreal’s Hermann Ngoudjo (17-2-0, 9 KO’s) will get a second crack at boxing glory, this time against former world champion Juan Urango (20-1-1, 16 KO’s), for the now vacant IBF Junior Welterweight (140 lbs.) championship.

In an official letter sent to Groupe Yvon Michel (GYM), and Urango’s promoter, Seminole Warriors Boxing, the IBF confirmed that Paul Malignaggi (25-1-0, 5 KO’s would not be able to grant Ngoudjo, his mandatory challenger, a rematch, and that he therefore will be vacating his belt.

The IBF has set an October 18th deadline for GYM and Seminole Warriors Boxing to reach an agreement, or it will order a purse bid to determine the details of this intriguing world title bout.

This past January, in Atlantic City, in his first world title fight, Ngoudjo gave the defending champion Malignaggi all he could handle, and then some, seemingly doing enough to bring the title to Montreal, only to be denied by the judges in a controversial unanimous decision setback.

Undeterred by the bitter defeat to Malignaggi, Ngoudjo quickly earned a second crack at the IBF crown, outpointing former WBA champion Souleymane M’Baye (36-3-1, 21 KO’s) over 12 rounds in an IBF title eliminator, on June 6, 2008, at Montreal’s Uniprix Stadium,

While Ngoudjo, a master boxer, who isn’t affraid to mix things up, had to deal with the elusive Malignaggi in January, his second title opportunity will pose a different set of challenges altogether when he faces the rock-fisted Urango, considered by many to be one of the hardest hitters in the sport.
Urango is best known for dropping his world title to the aforementioned Ricky Hatton in January of 2007, in Las Vegas, but it was the showstopping power he flashed en route to gaining the title that put Urango on the boxing map.
Like Ngoudjo, Urnago had to win his way back into title contention, and he did just that this past April, destroying veteran Carlos Wilfredo Vilches (53-8-2, 31 KO’s) in the fourth round to earn the IBF’s #2 ranking at junior welterweight.

Ngoudjo, who became a naturualized Canadian this past spring, is eagerly looking forward to another shot at the IBF belt :

”After my win over M’Baye, I knew Malignaggi would never get in the same ring as me again He’d just assume avoid me,” Ngoudjo said.

”Urango is a very dangerous hitter, and it’s going to be a real challenge, but my days of being a contender are over, and it’s time for me to take the next step.”

Many feel Ngoudjo already has, with his last four fights coming against either reigning or former world champions, nothcing two wins, and two disputed loses against the likes of Jose Luis Castillo (56-9-1, 48 KO’s), Randall Bailey (37-6-0, 34 KO’s), Malignaggi, and M’Baye .

According to GYM President Yvon Michel, Ngoudjo was willing to wait to face the winner of Malignaggi-Hatton, but neither fighter would guarantee Ngoudjo a shot at the title.

”We were willing to be paitient and step asside to let Malignaggi defend his belt against Hatton, but we would have to be guaranteed an immediate fight against the winner, We never received that guarantee, so we pushed the IBF to call a purse bid, which forced Malignaggi to vacate his title,” Michel said.

”In the end though, Herman has already proven himself to be an elite fighter. His last four fights have all been against either reigning or former world champions, and he’s 2-2 with both loses coming on very controversial decisions. He’s fought the cream of the crop at junior welterweight. He has the experience, and the maturity, and he’s shown that he’s one of the best 140 lb. fighters in the world.”

Diaz Out Of Coma

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

Two months after being rendered comatose in a televised bout against Delvin Rodriguez, San Antonio welterweight Oscar Diaz is awake and breathing on his own, reports ESPN’s Dan Rafael.

“He’s opening his eyes and showing improvement. He is off the ventilator and breathing on his own,” a spokesman said to ESPN.

“It’s very exciting to see Oscar open his eyes,” says Oscar’s mother Theresa Diaz to WOAI.com. “He’s a fighter and I believe he will get better.”

Diaz (26-3, 12 KOs), age 25, collapsed after the 10th round on July 16 in San Antonio.

His bout was the main event of ESPN’s Wednesday Night Fights. He was rushed to the hospital with his boxing gloves still on. After undergoing surgery to relieve swelling in his brain, he has been comatose.

POST FIGHT QUOTES

Peter Quillin:

“I felt like the guy wasn’t answering back and the ref stopped. I should get credit for beating a guy like that. He’s very durable. I almost hurt my hands I hit him so hard.”

“I came here to win, going the distance and winning round, or stopping him. I knew he came to fight and I’m proud with the win.”

“I’m dedicated myself to boxing 24 hours a day. This is my job, not a hobby. I wanted to show people tonight that I’m an all-around fighter. I was ready to go 10 rounds. He was durable but I had to chase him a bit.”

Ronald Hearns:

“I’m very happy. I established my jab and showed my speed. I thought it was a great performance tonight.”

“This will make me sharper for my next fight.”

“Early next year I think I’ll be ready for a world title shot. When I’m out in with an A fighter, I’ll fight to their level. I fight a lot of those guys in the gym.”

“I’ve only been doing this since I was 24. I wasn’t allowed to put on gloves until then and it’s amazing what I’m doing now.”

Danny O’Connor:

“I’ve started my pro career and put my amateur career behind me. I felt great. It was a great debut in front of all my fans, friends and family. I wanted everything to be perfect, but with the crowed, my family, no headgear….I came out eager. I’m happy with the way I fought”

“Signing with Warriors Boxing was the best fit for me and my family.”

“Me and my coaches work a lot on body punching, even in the amateurs, but sometimes body punches don’t score points. I slowed him down (with body punches) and the rounds are longer. I felt one connect and I knew that punch really hurt him. His corner threw in the towel.”

Watch This Fight! Tsurkan/Angulo

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

On Saturday October 4th Andrey Tsurkan (26- 3, 17KO) will go to battle against undefeated prospect Alfredo Angulo (13-0, 10KO). The Tsurkan vs. Angulo bout is scheduled for 10 rounds in the jr. middleweight division and will be part of that evenings HBO Boxing After Dark’s special edition triple header.
TSURKAN TRAINING CAMP NOTES
Andrey
Tsurkan has had a tremendous training camp, getting work from numerous top rated contenders, including fellow Star Boxing stable-mate and current USBA welterweight champion Delvin Rodriguez (23-2-1, 14KO).

“I feel great,” said Tsurkan following an intense sparring session with Rodriguez. Tsurkan looked very sharp and in excellent condition, which is typical of the Ukraine native, now living and training in the Bronx. Tsurkan who is ranked as the WBC #9, WBA #12 jr. middleweight in the world always comes to fight and his non stop punching, aggressive style always makes for good and exciting fights. Tsurkan was last seen in action taking on the always tough and durable Jesse Feliciano back on April 25th of this year. It was Feliciano’s first fight since challenging Kermit Cintron for the IBF welterweight championship of the world. The fight was extremely close until the tenth round when Cintron finally was able to get to Feliciano and the fight was stopped. Tsurkan had a much easier time with Feliciano, dominating him from the opening bell until the eighth round when the referee had finally seen enough and called a halt to the contest at 1:17.

“I feel that I am in tremendous shape and I am looking forward to the fight on the 4th. I know Angulo is tough, but so am I,” stated a focused Tsurkan. Joe DeGuardia CEO of Star Boxing, and longtime promoter of Tsurkan, voiced a similar feeling regarding his jr. middleweight’s upcoming fight. “Andrey always comes to fight and always puts himself in the best possible position to come out victorious. This kid is like a machine. He is always pushing himself that extra inch or extra mile. He is the type of fighter you have to make sure he doesn’t over train, rather than not train enough. The fight with Angulo is going to be an absolute war. Both of these guys are tough kids who like to fight and have good power in both their hands. I don’t think there is a question that this is going to be the fight of the night, and to be honest, it has the makings to be a fight of the year candidate,” said DeGuardia. “We are very confident in Andrey’s ability and feel that his toughness and experience will propel him to a victory come October 4th.”

“Yeah he is definitely ready,” said USBA welterweight champion Delvin Rodriguez. “He is very strong, and his pressure and punch output make him a very difficult opponent to deal with. I have seen Angulo fight and know he definitely has a lot of potential, but this is a huge step up for him taking on Andrey and I don’t think Angulo will be able to withstand the constant pressure put on him.”

Team Tsurkan feels that Angulo does not really know what he is getting himself into with their fighter. “If Andrey fights the way we know he can and sticks to the game plan it’s going to be a very long night for Angulo,” said Tsurkan’s manager Anthony Fiorino. “This is the best Andrey I have seen in a longtime. He is determined and he has been working harder than ever in the gym preparing for this fight. Angulo is going to be in for a rude awakening come October 4th,” stated Mike Redd, Tsurkan’s trainer.

UFC ANNOUNCES TICKETS ON SALE FOR

UFC 91: COUTURE vs. LESNAR

“THE NATURAL” COUTURE vs. BROCK LESNAR

UFC® WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP

SATURDAY, NOV. 15, 2008

LIVE FROM MGM GRAND GARDEN ARENA

Tickets on Sale Saturday, Sept. 20 at 11am PT

Las Vegas, NV (USA) – The Ultimate Fighting Championship® (UFC®) today announced that tickets for what is expected to be the biggest UFC event in history will go on public sale this Saturday, Sept. 20 at 11am PT.

“Our estimates project that UFC 91: Couture vs. Lesnar will be the highest grossing UFC pay-per-view event in history,” said Dana White, UFC President.

UFC® Fight Club™ members can purchase tickets on Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 10am PT via the website ufc.com, and a special Internet ticket pre-sale will be available to UFC newsletter subscribers on Friday, Sept. 19 starting at 10am PT. To access this presale, users must register for the UFC newsletter through ufc.com.

Earlier this month, White announced that after a year away from the game, UFC® heavyweight champion Randy “The Natural” Couture will make his long-awaited return to the Octagon to defend his title against rising star Brock Lesnar in a clash of titans destined to shake the foundations of the sport. This championship bout, the biggest heavyweight title fight in years, will headline UFC 91: COUTURE vs. LESNAR, live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday, Nov. 15, 2008.

“I am happy to announce that UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture will be returning to action in the Octagon,” said Dana White, UFC President. “He’s a legend in the UFC, and I have always said that wrestling is one of the best bases you can have in MMA and not only is Randy a top level wrestler but his opponent is as well. Brock Lesnar showed the MMA world that he is for real in his last fight, dismantling the far more experienced Heath Herring. His combination of speed and power was absolutely devastating. It is a fascinating matchup: the crafty, multiple-time heavyweight champion versus the younger, bigger, and stronger challenger. This is one that will go down in the history books.”

UFC 91: COUTURE vs. LESNAR will be available live on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. EST/7 p.m. PST on iN DEMAND, DIRECTV, DISH Network, TVN, Bell ExpressVu, Shaw Communications and Viewer’s Choice Canada for a suggested retail price of $44.95 for standard definition or high-definition broadcasts (where available).

A UFC Hall of Famer whose name is synonymous with mixed martial arts, Randy ‘The Natural’ Couture (16-8) is the only fighter in history to win the UFC world heavyweight title three times, and that’s not even mentioning his two UFC light heavyweight titles. Owner of heavyweight wins over the likes of Maurice Smith, Vitor Belfort, Kevin Randleman, and Pedro Rizzo (twice), the 45-year old Las Vegas resident turned back the clock in 2007 with a stirring win over Tim Sylvia at UFC 68 that netted him his third heavyweight crown. Couture defended his title for the first time at UFC 74 with a third round TKO of number one contender Gabriel Gonzaga, and now the man often referred to as “Captain America” will look to prove once again that he should never be counted out in a fight when he takes on Brock Lesnar.

“I have a lot of respect for Brock as an athlete and a collegiate wrestler, but I know exactly where he’s at, he’s trying to make the transition from a wrestler to mixed martial arts,” said Couture. “I’ve been there, done that, and I know where the pitfalls are. This will be an interesting matchup, and it will be very nice to be home in the Octagon for this fight.”

A physically gifted athlete with the size, speed, and power to impose his will on any opponent, Brock Lesnar (2-1) made an immediate impact in the UFC when he debuted here in February of 2008, and he has his sights set on shocking the world on November 15th. A four-time All-American, two-time Big Ten Champion, and 2000 NCAA Division I National Champion in wrestling, Lesnar made a name for himself internationally after college as a professional wrestler, but he soon found his true love in mixed martial arts in 2006. After a 69 second win in his pro debut a year later, Lesnar entered the UFC and made a positive impression in a loss to former heavyweight champion Frank Mir at UFC 81, but at UFC 87 in August, the Minneapolis-St. Paul resident showed why he is rapidly becoming one of the most feared fighters in the sport today and an immediate threat to the heavyweight throne.

“It’s an honor to fight Randy Couture, he’s a legend in this sport, and to get the chance to test myself against him is a gift,” said Lesnar. “A lot guys would love to have this opportunity, Randy is the UFC heavyweight champion. There is one goal that I’ve had since I started training in MMA and that is to capture the title. Now that I’m getting the chance, nothing is going to stop me. I’m walking out of the Octagon with the belt around my waist.”

Kevin Johnson Calls Out Haye

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

WBA #7 heavyweight Kevin “Kingpin” Johnson (20-0-1, 7KO) fresh off his 5th round destruction of former heavyweight champion of the world Bruce Seldon (38-7, 34KO) was left speechless, a very uncommon occurrence for the colorful Johnson, upon hearing that fellow top 10 heavyweight contender David Haye (21- 1, 20KO) was still looking for an opponent for his heavyweight debut on November 15th.
JOHNSON WILLING TO DO ANYTHING TO PROVE HE IS THE BEST
KJ
“I don’t understand,” said a perplexed Johnson who sat shaking his head for several minutes. “This guy runs his mouth for months saying that he is going to take over the heavyweight division, that he is going to knock this guy and that guy out, but here I am stepping up to the plate, and now he doesn’t want the fight,” questioned Johnson.

“Maybe he thought I wouldn’t want the fight and he wasn’t prepared for my acceptance, but he obviously doesn’t know Kevin Johnson then. I have said since day one that I would fight anyone, anywhere, anytime. The fight with Haye would take place in his backyard, his homeland of London, and that still didn’t bother me. He knows that it wouldn’t matter if he had his entire country screaming and cheering for him because once he gets in that ring, it’s just me and him.

This guy is a complete joke, he talks all this crap how he will fight anyone and he is the man now in the heavyweight division, yet he has not fought anyone yet, and I am here telling him that I want the fight, I want to come to London and show his country what a real heavyweight looks like, and he punks out. He says he is the best heavyweight in the world, and I feel that I am the best, so to me it’s simple, let’s put the two best heavyweights in the world against one another and whoever comes out on top truly can call themselves THE best.

Next time you plan on running your mouth and calling people out, be prepared to accept the consequences and be prepared to fight. Hopefully you will change your mind and man up and we can get this over with, but it’s pretty obvious you are just flat out afraid of me and to be honest I can’t blame you. I am reading now that his manager Adam Booth is saying that three guys have pulled out and acting like noone wants to fight this guy. They also accused me of asking for too much money. Those statements are both completely one hundred percent false. I heard that they offered the other guys more money than me anyways. Let’s just stop the excuses and make this fight happen. If the big bad Haye is scared then I hope he is man enough to at least admit that.

I am the best heavyweight in the division and to prove that I am willing to fight the best, or so-called best heavyweights out there. If anyone wants to challenge that or disagrees with my statement, call my promoter Joe DeGuardia at Star Boxing, he is great to work with and can set something up the following day if you want, I will be ready,” stated an irate Johnson.
