At 5’ 11”, Antonio Margarito won’t be the first big man Shane Mosley has faced in the ring. Over his career Mosley has stood up to a litany of larger men and has more than held his own. In eight marquee match ups against four taller and naturally bigger opponents, Mosley has four wins and four losses.
Oscar De La Hoya, 5’ 10 ½”
In June of 2000, Shane Mosley went toe-to-toe with WBC welterweight champion Oscar De La Hoya. In just his third fight at 147 lbs., Mosley dethroned De La Hoya by out-fighting him down the stretch. Mosley grew stronger as the fight waged on and came out victorious via split decision. When the two met again in September 2003, the contest was staged at 154 lbs. At stake were De La Hoya’s WBC and WBA light middleweight titles. Mosley had just one fight at 154 lbs in preparation for his rematch with De La Hoya but was the victor nonetheless.
Vernon Forrest, 6’ 0”
In a January 2002 defense of the welterweight title he won from De La Hoya, Mosley squared off against a familiar foe. Vernon Forrest beat Mosley at the 1992 Olympic trials and 10 years later would do the same in the professional ranks. In round two of the championship bout Forrest landed a crushing right hand that lead to a knockdown. At the hands of Forrest, Mosley suffered his first knockdown and his first loss as a professional. Eager to revenge the loss Mosley tangled with Forrest a second time less than six months later. The result was the same; a twelve round victory for Forrest.
Ronald “Winky” Wright, 5’ 10 ½”
In Wright, Mosley was facing a career light middleweight and a battle tested champion. When the pair got together in March of 2004, it was for the undisputed light middleweight championship of the world. Wright walked Mosley down behind a stinging jab and left hand. Mosley displayed “power boxing” but had difficulty penetrating Wright’s defense. Wright dominated the scorecards in winning a unanimous decision. In their November rematch Mosley fared better but could not reverse the result. Mosley suffered the fourth loss of his career.
Fernando Vargas, 5” 10”
Fernando Vargas was coming off four straight wins, two at middleweight, when he met Mosley in February 2006. For his part Mosley was coming off two straight wins down in the welterweight division. Mosley was declared the winner when the fight was stopped due to a huge swelling on the left side of Vargas’ face. A rematch was in order and the two got together five months later. Mosley dominated the July fight, stopping Vargas in the sixth round. With two TKO victories on his ledger Mosley was back in the hunt for another world title.
Shane Mosley vs. Antonio Margarito
Can Mosley slay another Goliath by upsetting the WBA welterweight champion? Antonio Margarito is not the tallest opponent Mosley will have faced; Forrest stands an even 6’ tall. Margarito may not be the biggest puncher Mosley will have faced; both Forrest and Vargas have higher knockout ratios. And Mosley can take a punch. Mosley has never been stopped in the ring; not at lightweight, at welterweight or at light middleweight. But Antonio Margarito may be the most relentless brawler Mosley has ever seen. A pressure fighter who never stops pressing forward, Margarito throws punch after punch until he breaks down the man in front of him. In his July 2008 victory over then WBA welterweight champion Miguel Cotto, Margarito walked through an avalanche of Cotto blows until he overwhelmed him in the eleventh. In his two victories over the heavy-handed Kermit Cintron, Margarito subdued Cintron with his determination as much as his hook and uppercut. And, like Mosley, Margarito has an iron chin. Margarito has been stopped by cuts but has never been counted out.
On Saturday, January 24, Shane Mosley will challenge Antonio Margarito for the WBA welterweight championship of the world. Join us for live, round by round coverage of the fight from Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA. Coverage begins at 9 PM ET / 6 PM PT.
this is going to be a war of attrition….but i believe shane has what it takes to beat margarito….margarito fights one way & also cannot fight going backwards…if nazim richardson did his homework & i believe he did, this fight will be like hopkins vs pavlik…shane must give angles & go to margaritos body…but knowing shane, he will stand & bang with the “tornado” @ times. Margarito is slow, but effective…styles make fights people & mosley’s style will be the factor. One more thing i like to add…mosley cannot paw with his jab…he must snap it repeatedley in margaritos face to set up his combos..prediction: shane by late round stoppage or unanimous decision.
Fighter put their height up and their ages down. Trust me! The Tijuana Tornado ain’t 5′11 and Sugar Shane ain’t 5′9. They are both shorter than those listed heights.
I rooted for Antonio Margarito in his bout with Miguel Cotto last year. I thought, Margarito, was well overdue for a big mega-fight. Still, I cannot help but to go with my gut feeling and root for ,”Sugar” Shane, in this highly intersting match-up. Shane needs this win… especially with the bad press right now about the whole Balco situation (Which is ridiculous.) Shane needs to go out big, and nothing would be sweeter than a win over, Margarito.
rito is improving entering his prime and getting better with each fight, mosley is not, the result should be a win for rito as mosley although still world class couldnt see his prime in the reirview mirror, hes gonna need a bat to hurt rito , all of shanes kos were at 135, he needs to use his speed and quickness and forget about power in this match
Sugar Shane, round 10 tko. It’ll be a hard fight, and I do not underestimate Margarito, but Shane has better endurance and a better chin than Cotto. Tho he is not as hard of a hitter, he is faster and has that heart and grit and determination to kill it. I wish Cotto luck in his next fight.
When the fight was just an idea .. everyone was thinking Mosley should bring a casket to the ring after Marg’s deomlition of Cotto… Now the fight is a reality i do think Mosley will be stopped for the first time in his career, a la Johnson / Jones KO. I remember Mosley looked very flinchy against Cotto and Marg bangs that much harder.
SHANE WAZZ GO BUT MARGARITO IS GREAT ,MARGARITO DESTROYS MOSLEY IN 9 ROUNDS.
im so glad gb made this fight here in la i bought my tickets already and can’t wait to go. this is a great fight and the perfect fight to kick off ‘09 along with berto vs. collazo.
MARGARITO IS GOING TO DESTROY MOSLEY IN 11 ROUNDS I CAN SEE. MOSLEY RUNING LIKE COTTO AND HOLINDING THAT NIGHT MARGARITO WILL BE THE MAN AND MOSLEY WILL BE HIS WOMAN
Margarito will retire Mosley with the pressure and constant body punching and just punching period. I thought Cotto was wearing shane down and was about to stop him, but took his foot of the pedal. The TiJuana Tornado will not. MARGARITO IN 9.
mosley is going to try to copy hopkins/pavlik, think again there is only on hopkins, mosley is too hot headed, richardson won’t do any good for mosley, mosley really thinks he can slug it out with margo, he say’s margarito is not big, and that he is used to fighting big guy’s, mosley is going to be in for surprise margo will ko him in 9 rounds
mosley has a stronger chin than cotto but his defense is very much open compared to cotto. I hope he will change his defense when fighting margarito.
Im sure manny will pulvurize hatton… if u were not blind… manny last 3 big fights they even noy hurt manny… hatton style, nothing compared 2 manny… he can’t hug manny that he usually do…
Hello Levis!! i think one of those 3 fights was with Marquez.. and yes do believe that Maquez did stun pac man a couple of times. Game recognize Game Mayne!!!
There is no way Shane beats Margarito, El tornado his a stronger puncher, has a chin of steel, a endless will and motor that never stops, by the 9 round you will see a shane catching air and thinking how I got in to this ?.
Mosley is close to the end of his career. He is technically sound but doesnt have the power and at this stage of his life probably not even the will to withstand the assault of Margarito. Against Cotto he was pretty good but he never managed to really hurt him and went out of gas at the end. Against the same figher (who was at his prime at the time of fight) Margarito took the best Cotto had to offer (quite a bit actually from a young, strong and technically superior champion), just went through it and overwhelmed him at the end as should have been expected. Before that fight I was thinking that Cotto could be the winner if he had Hagler’s chin and was the aggressor all night long. But Cotto is not Hagler and Margarito is not Hearns. Anyway..
The result of the fight will depend on how motivated and well prepared Margarito will be now that he has proven his worth to the world. If he takes this fight seriously then Mosley is probably in for the bitting of his life, lasting to the end on his feet due to his pride but all swollen up or going down for the first time in his life between rounds 9 and 12.
I truley belive that Margarito will out will Mosley ,Cotto was very elusive when Maragarito threw his punches in the first rounds ,,, it was not after the 6th and on forth rounds that Margarito started to land, Cotto felt them and he folded ,, Mosley is not that elusive his style is technical he will get hit in earlier rounds he will feel the margaritos punches he will fall.
Margaritto is on his moment of his career he beated the best Boxer Cotto so I think Tony Will beat mosely he knock him out
Mosley will look like De LaHoya did against the Pacman at the end of the fight-beaten, broken down and contemplating his future. Mosley won’t be able to “juice up” for this fight as he did with De LaHoya. Can Shane spell Excedrin and knockout? Say goodnight Shane.
I do not see Sugar Shane Mosley beating Maragarito. I think it will be just like Delayho vs Pacman fight. Evening though I think Mosley will be a little more aggresive than Delayho I think the outcome will be the same. Margarito is a straight forward fighter and the pressure will be too much for Shane Mosley to handle. It would have been a better fight between Hopkins. I think Hopkins is a more aggressive fighter than his other two partner. The fight will last about 8 rounds with Mosley not answering the bell in the 9th round, because of cuts…
Antonio Margarito………..he’s the best welterweight fighter now…..Mosley is just an old fighter trying to prove that he can still fight……Margarito will destroy him….i hope Margarito beat his ass bad so he can retire of this game cause this “Shane” guy is old and all he does is run like a chicken he doesnt fight like a real man like Margarito does…..Shane is going to be trying to box Margarito and run …. but Margarito will get him by the 6 round and knock the shit out of Mosley………..Theres just no way Shane can beat Margarito….
need i say it? come on dawg! margarito is gonna woop that ass, sugar aint that sweet no more. amen.
First of all Margorito is an absolute beast. Mosley has looked very sluggish in his last couple fights. he is definatly past his prime and margarito is in his prime. mosley gets ko’2 in 10…know youve heard it…i will be watching this event on currans huge tv.
Looking at what Margarito did to cotto, Cotto was hurt, bruised, and splattered all over the ring. Although Mosley has the better chin, he is not the same ko boxer he was years ago. That is not the same “sugar” Shane that fought Oscar del. Margarito was getting hit with bombs against cotto. and was walking through them, and answering with crushing blows. If Mosley couldnt even beat cotto…What do you think Margarito is going to do to him…..Looks like a heavy downpours of ravishing right hooks for “Sugar”…and the tornado is going to rip his heart out and eat it.
sugar shane will win in like a 9 10 round stopich i doent see margarita doent stand a chance to mosley like i said mosley 9,10 round victory!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Margarito will slowly beat down mosely like cotto and make him suffer……Viva Mexico!!!
WHAT!!! your crazy margarito will win the first few rounds but he ant gonna last with mosely will win 9/10 round ko!!!
margarito is a unstopable man, sugar is fast and he can hit, but i think margarito wins based in his upercut, and left hook, margarito by tko 8-11.
NO!!NO!!! margarito will go for the kill right a way and mosley will take him out later in the fight with power pounchis his way mor powerfulll thean margarito and margarito will be tired by 8/9 rounds 9/10 round ko mosley wins
Mosley took care of business! 9th round KO, a round earlier than my prediction. “Da CHamp” you were right on the money and I love when fans are loyal to their fight rather than being a fighter-of-the-month nuthugger. I’m sure all those Margarito fans are huddled in the cornersof their room in fetal position talking to themselves. Mosley Boma Ye baby!!!
if magarito vs pacquiao will happen, the same result as margarito vs mosley… margarito is too slow…. pacquaio is a lot quicker than old mosley… but credit to mosley he’s a warrior!!!!
Mosley just pulled off a masterpiece performance knocking out Margarito in 9 rounds. I dont know why everybody was for Margarito. Nobody respects athleticism and technique when it come to mexican fans. They found out that the come straight forward style doesnt work with elite fighters like mosley. Holla
i told everyone i know that cotto soften up margarito. no man can take that kind of punishment no not be effected. cotto’s legs went on him there fore getting damaged to the face,(i wonder if margo used that illegal wrap against cotto also, hmmmm)? and he (cotto) only had half the game plan down. combinations, jabs, keeping close to the body so the punches would have no real effect, even body shots. that is the formula. paul williams did it, cotto had half of it and mosley perfected it. the tornado turns out was nothing but a wirlpool. off night for margo? maybe, but i really think the punishment he took from cotto cracked his armor seriously. margarito is SLOW, fighters with some speed have proven this over and over again. margo is a tough fighter, but the puzzle has been solved and he doesnt look that scary anymore.
Margarito is strong comes forward and takes a lot of punishment. Margarito is not a technical fighter like most Mexican fighters. If he fights fighters like Mosley, Floyd Mayweather, Williams which he lost to and others that have the speed and the chin. He will lose. Margarito is just a strong fighter with no technique. Margarito’s style is to come forward no matter how much punishment he takes, he then tires out the opponent to win. Margarito is not a great fighter but he has the courage, heart and determination to win which is what most Mexican fighters have.
I guess that is all that it took to win most of his fights but he has been uncovered by Mosley. Expect Margarito to have a lot more problems in his coming fights.
WHAT SHOULD HAPPEN IS MAGARITO SHOULD BE SUSPENDED FOR AT LEAST 2 YEARS FOR HIS ILLEGAL PLASTER IN HIS HANDS. NOW WE WILL HAVE TO GO BACK TO EACH ONE OF HIS FIGHTS ESPECIALLY COTTO BECAUSE IT WAS NOT A LEGITIMATE KNOCK OUT. HE CHEATED WITH THE PLASTER THAT MADE HIS HANDS LIKE STEAL. THIS HAS TO BE STOPPED IN BOXING PEOPLE LIFES ARE AT STAKE ALREADY IN THIS BRUTAL SPORT. THAT IS TO MUCH OF AN ADVANTAGE TO HAVE SOMETHING IN YOUR GLOVES THAT MAKES THEM LIKE CONCRETE, NO MAN SHOULD HAVE TO ENDURE IT. THE MORE I THINK ABOUT IT THE MORE I BELIEVE HE SHOULD BE BANNED FOR LIFE. ITS UP TO BOXING TO FINALLY DO THE RIGHT THING. THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO A YOUNG BOXER ABOUT 22 YEARS AGO NAMED COLLINS WHEN SOME IDIOT WAS ALLOWED TO TAKE THE PADDING OUT OF HIS GLOVES AND REPLACE THEM WITH SOMETHING ELSE. HE RUINED THE GUY LIFE AND HE EVENTUALLY KILLED HIMSELF. ITS TIME TAKE A HARD STANCE OF SOMEONE TRYING TO PERMANENTLY INJUR ANOTHER FIGHTER.
