________________________________
Juan “Baby Bull” Diaz is not a big puncher. Over his career Diaz has stopped less than half of his opponents. Diaz does not possess terribly fast hands. In his only professional loss Diaz was repeatedly beat to the punch by then 36 year old Nate Campbell. And, Diaz gets hit a lot; perhaps too much. His best defense is his offense. So how does a fighter with limited pop, average hand speed and a suspect defense win a world title by the age of 20? In football parlance, the man can really get after it.

A defensive lineman who lines up snap after snap and pressures the quarterback on every play is said to have a motor that doesn’t stop. Juan Diaz can answer the bell, round after round, and get after the man standing in front of him. Former world champion Acelino Freitas can attest. After eight grueling rounds Diaz beat the fight out of Freitas who retired on his stool. Former world champion Julio Diaz can also attest. Pressure caused Julio Diaz to abandon his stick and move game plan and simply fight. Julio couldn’t match Juan’s intensity and was stopped in the ninth. Australian action fighter Michael Katsidis also lost out on a championship at the busy hands of Diaz. When Diaz is at his best he pumps the jab and lets his hands go.

Juan Manuel Marquez is a precision instrument. He’s a scalpel sharpened to dissect; a laser beamed to cut; a counter-puncher poised to strike. For years Marquez was avoided by the biggest names in his division. Fighting him was considered too much risk and not enough reward. Unable to secure fights against his countrymen, Marquez’ first mega bout came against hard charging Manny “Pac Man” Pacquiao. (Pacquiao was everyone’s darling having dominated Marco Antonio Barrera six months earlier.) The Pacquiao-Marquez fight was an instant classic and made both men household names. Pacquiao was lauded for his explosive punching power; Marquez for countering Pacquiao’s aggression and working his way back into the fight. When Marquez is at his best he feeds off his opponent’s frenzy and counters him to death.

On Saturday, February 28, Juan Manuel Marquez will face another charging bull in Juan Diaz at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. Can the 35 year old master technician set traps for Diaz and pick him apart? Or, will the 25 year old Diaz overwhelm the career featherweight with a stampede of punches to earn the victory? Find out here as TSS will be ringside in Houston to bring you the action beginning at 9 PM ET / 6 PM PT.

ill go for marquez!! as a pacman fan, i reckon marquez is the toughest one he ever fought so far.. he(marquez) got very impressive counter-punching skills.. and even you knock him down he always finds a way to come back.. diaz is no match!!

  2. Radam G aka Humble PRG Says:

I going for the Baby Bull. He will beat this canvas smoocher. Holla!

  3. MistaLee Says:

Marquez wins, 8th round TKO. Diaz is too one dimensional and just “comes forward” (really boring to watch from my perspective). Even other tough guys like Joe Frazier, Penalosa etc are more interesting to watch b/c they can really mix their game up, Frazier with his erratic head movement and Penalosa with his patient stalking style and hard body punches. Diaz just moves and punches punches punches…. like a more polished Bum Bum Bautista, who unlike Bumtista, doesn’t just punch himself out and leave himself open. I have all the respect in the world for Marqez, and that guy can punch and his shoulders and back are so huge. That can pack a lot of power. Diaz is gonna get hit hard, get devastated and fight one or two tomato cans afterward in his efforts to rebuild his career. Just an opinion. Pc! TSS is awesome!

  4. Neophyte Says:

JuanD over JuanM…..JMM is old at 36 and beat an older fighter in JoelC. JMM’s move to 135 will be his Waterloo. JuanMa’s old body will give in this time. He has been to so many brutal wars, wear and tear will tax him now. JuanD is young and strong. But don’t get me wrong, I respect JMM’s skills and ability very much. So far he is the only one that pushed Pacman to the edge!! It’s just that……he is aging. That is my analysis and belief, but if Dinamita wins, i would rather see PacMan scrap with him again than Floyd. But alas, MP will not go down to 135…..!

  5. FRANK D. Says:

I THINK THAT DIAZ WILL WIN THIS FIGHT DUE TO THE DIFFERENCE IN AGE AND HIS ABILITY TO GET INTO SUCH GREAT SHAPE. HIS ONE LOSS TO CAMPBELL WAS PART DUE TO A CUT CAUSED BY A BUT. DIAZ HAS THE DESIRE AND ABILITY TO BEAT THIS GREAT BUT OLD FIGHTER.

  6. El Churro Says:

In response to Neophyte, JMM still has it at 36 and still has 3 to 4 fights before his “old body” gives in. I think JMM is going to use JD’s style of just going forward to his advantage and just counter punch the crap out of him. It’ll be just a matter of time before JD goes down..

  7. Big Pete Says:

This will be a great fight. Diaz will be strong early, but JMM will be stronger later. I see JMM winning a close but clear unanimous decision and going on to bigger and better things. Hopefully people will realize what a truly great fighter Marquez is.

i think juan diaz will knock marquez in no time.

  12. juna Says:

baby bull is a good boxer but for me he is no match for jmm speed.even pacman speed couldnt match marquez.i go for jmm.

  13. jojo Says:

im a pac fan, counter punch style is marquez specialty and very effective and he also has good hand speed and power too, and lot more expirience than diaz, i remember his last fight with casamayor he has the power and strenght. ill go with jmm

  14. lol Says:

I’ve seen so many “He’s too old”. I may have agreed to that before but, after Shane Mosley’s win to Margarito (cheater or not, he’s younger), Hopkins win to Pavlik and, of course, Marquez’s performance in last fights (including the Pacquiao fight), I would not give Marquez’s age that much weight in this fight. I would give Diaz’s age some though. Diaz has way too much to win (and little to lose in this case), and his youth and hunger may cloud his judgment, pushing too much and making mistakes. Marquez will take advantage of every single one of them (Man, is he good at it) and will make sure judges see. If Marquez gets Diaz too hard in one of those mistakes, it will be a KO. I see Diaz with better punchstat numbers, but I also see Marquez’s connecting the important ones, stealing most of the rounds and, if not a KO/TKO, winning a wide decision.

  15. MistaLee Says:

*ahem* preparing the crow…. who wants first? :-) tho it turned out to be more of a fight than i thought and much closer, but really, with feathers or without guys? ’s all good.
