Travis Kauffman Knocks Out Livin Castillo in Three Rounds!
-FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE-

Reading, PA- The first event to feature boxing and mixed martial arts on the same card in Pennsylvania was a resounding success for King’s Promotions Saturday night. Nearly 2000 paying customers were on hand at the Sovereign Center in Reading, PA to watch local heavyweight prospect Travis Kauffman raise his record to 17-0 (14 KO) against dangerous trial horse Livin Castillo of Ecuador, now 14-7 (9 KO).

Travis Kauffman entered Saturday’s bout against Castillo looking to make a statement to the boxing world. When referee Gary Rosato waived the bout off at 1:26 of the third round, Kauffman accomplished the feat in emphatic fashion. Castillo had only been bested by the elite level of fighters he has faced but never had he been taken out so quickly. The previous record was set by former heavyweight champion Oleg Maskaev, who needed 1:30 of the third to get the job done. At 23 years old, Kauffman has yet to reach his physical prime, suggesting that the best is yet to come.

Kauffman, who weighed in at a career low 220.5, made his first appearance in his hometown of Reading since making his national television debut earlier this year a memorable affair. Castillo, 210.5, was the first southpaw opponent Kauffman had faced as a pro and made the first round close with his awkward style.

Kauffman made a key adjustment in the second round when he switched to southpaw as well and began working effectively behind a right jab. A number of right hooks and solid body shots followed that began to sap the desire from the fighter known as “La Maquina”. “Once I switched up my stance, he couldn’t hit me,” Kauffman later recalled.

The conclusion came as the result of a hard right hook to the body that echoed with a resounding effect throughout the arena. The referee took note of the pained expression on Castillo and decided he could not continue.

Kauffman has now won his last seven bouts by knockout with none of them lasting more than three rounds. “The day I stop learning is the day I stop fighting,” says Kauffman.

Matthews Terrorizes Pasley Over 8

In the co-featured bout, Julio Cesar Matthews of Reading, PA by way of Harrisburg overcame a closed right eye to score a unanimous decision win over Kamarah Pasley of Philadelphia. Matthews, 8-0 (5 KO), scored a knockdown at the end of the second with a right hook and followed up with one more in the third. An accidental headbutt stemmed the tide when Matthews’ right eye began to swell grotesquely. Pasley took advantage and got on the scoreboard with a solid fourth. Courageously, Matthews battled back to regain control of the fight in the fifth and dominated the final round with a series of solid punches from his southpaw stance.

The scores were 58-54, 59-53 and 59-52. Pasley, who had won four straight heading into the bout, drops to 4-4 (2 KO) with the defeat.

Tomlinson Returns with Win over Felton

Heavyweight favorite Craig Tomlinson of Reading won a four round unanimous decision over Jonathon Felton in his first fight in over five years. Tomlinson, aged 42, was the aggressor throughout the fight and never gave up the initiative. An accidental headbutt that caused a cut under Tomlinson’s left eye was the only abrasion visible on Tomlinson as he raised his record to 24-15-1 (13 KO) while dropping Felton to 6-15 (5 KO). The scores were 40-36 across the board.

Rodriguez Repeats Victory Over Thompson in Rematch

Proving that his too-close-for-comfort win over Travis Thompson in September was no fluke, Esteban Rodriguez raised his record to 5-1 (1 KO) with his unanimous decision over the now 3-6-1 (2 KO) Thompson. Thompson lived up to his nickname “The Animal” by aggressively pursuing the better skilled Rodriguez. Rodriguez’s faster hands and sharper combinations won over the judges, with scores of 40-36 being turned in on two cards and 39-37 coming in on the third.

Cruz Blows Away Allen

Ronald Cruz needed just 1 round, three minutes, to knock out Norman Allen. Cruz, now 5-0 (3 KO), blasted out the Laurel, MD resident who now has a record of 6-2 (3 KO) with a vicious assault along the ropes. Cruz, a Bethlehem, PA native, shined brightly in his first step-up fight.

Perez KOs Mbuza In 12th

Friday, May 29th, 2009

Colombian puncher Yonnhy Perez kept his record intact
by knocking out former #3 IBF contender
Silence Mabuza in front of his adoring South African fan base.

Johannesburg, South Africa (May 29, 2009) – Behind on all scorecards at the beginning of the 12th round, Perez landed a huge left hand jab that sent Mabuza to the canvas. Buzzed and on uneasy legs Mabuza beat the count. Perez proceeded to apply pressure and landed huge shots leaving no option for referee Kenny Chevalier to stop the fight with 1:06 left in the last stanza.

With the victory, Perez (19-0, 14 KOs) becomes the mandatory challenger for Joseph Abgeko who fights Vic Darchinyan on July 11 for the IBF bantamweight title.

“My corner told me I was losing. I knew I had to throw decisive shots and try to knock him out,” said Perez after the fight. “I countered him and hit him right on the button, it was not a lucky shot. He was in his hometown and we battled hard, Mabuza is a lion, but I knew some close rounds were going to go his way. I’m ready for the big challenge now.”

Barneys Photo Winners!

“BARNEYS” PHOTO WINNERS ANNOUNCED

They say a picture says a thousand words. But a great sports photograph is capable of saying so much more than that.

The winners of the Boxing Writers Association of American annual photography contest for 2008, an adjunct to the BWAA’s “Barneys” writing contest, cover the gamut of emotions in boxing: pain, exultation, apprehension. They’re all there, captured for posterity by the click of a camera.

The top two winners are Top Rank photographer’s Chris Farina and Ringside Photos’ Marty Rosengarten, who will recognized along with other honorees at the 84th annual BWAA Awards Dinner on June 12 at The Capitale in New York City.

Farina took first place in the Action Photo category for his shot of Manny Pacquiao landing an overhand left to the jaw of Juan Manuel Marquez, which resulted in Marquez being knocked down near the end of the third round and a shower of sweat and water rising from Marquez’ head like a wet crown. Pacquiao went on to score a split-decision victory.

Rosengarten led the field in the Feature Photo category for his photo of a jubilant Deandre Latimore bounding for joy after his seventh-round technical knockout of Sechew Powell.

Also placing in the Action Photo category are Edward Lea, of The Press of Atlantic City, who came in second for his shot of Antonio Margarito landing a left to the face of Kermit Cintron, and Ray Bailey, who took third for his shot of Bernard Hopkins’ seeming stranglehold on referee Benjy Esteves Jr. as he spins away from Kelly Pavlik.

Second place in the Feature Photo category went to Chris Cozzone, shooting for FightNews.com and FightwireImages, for a his shot of a worried-looking Oscar De La Hoya as he’s attended to in his corner during his bout with Manny Pacquiao. Taking third place is Ed Mulholland, of FightWireImages.com, whose straight-on look at the battered face of Gary Stark Jr. depicts just how tough boxing can be, even for the winners. Stark’s right eye is closed, but he was awarded a 10-round, unanimous decision over Andres Ledesma.

A record number of entries were received for the photo contest, as was the case in the writing contest.

The judges were Philadelphia Daily News photo editor Michael Mercanti and staff photographer David Maialetti.

WORLD CHAMPION CHAD DAWSON

VACATES IBF TITLE

PANAMA CITY, PANAMA (May 27, 2009) – Undefeated two-time light heavyweight champion CHAD DAWSON informed the International Boxing Federation (IBF) that he has vacated its title, effective immediately. Promoter Gary Shaw personally delivered the letter to the IBF at its annual convention which is being held in Panama City, Panama.

“The IBF rejected our request for an exception to making an immediate title defense against mandatory challenger Tavoris Cloud and inasmuch as no major television network was willing to buy the fight, the IBF left us little choice,” said Shaw. “I respect the IBF’s decision but the fight they were forcing us to do was commercially unviable. On behalf of Chad, we thank the IBF for the opportunity to fight for its title and to defend it. It’s an honor Chad will always cherish. Now it’s on to bigger and better. Chad looks forward to defending his International Boxing Organization title against the cream of the crop and unencumbered.”

Dawson (28-0, 17 KOs), from New Haven, Conn., serving his second term as light heavyweight champion, successfully defended the IBF and IBO titles on May 9 in a rematch against former world champion Antonio Tarver, whom he dethroned last October. Dawson won his first world title in 2007, dethroning undefeated defending WBC champion Tomasz Adamek. He successfully defended the WBC title three times, including a victory over former world champion Glen Johnson, before vacating that title to challenge Tarver.

Her 7-year-old brother found her unconscious and alerted her mother. The mother tried to revive the child of the 42-year-old ex pugilist, but was unable to do so.

She called 911, but the child was brain dead.

Undefeated welterweight titleholder Andre Berto (24-0, 19 KOs) delivers devastating knockout power with exceptional boxing skills and electrifying charisma. The 25-year-old native of Winter Haven, Fla. defeated veteran Steve Forbes in late 2008, following with a significant victory over former welterweight champ Luis Collazo in a grueling battle last January.

Juan Urango (21-1-1, 16 KOs), originally from Colombia and now living in Miami, is an aggressive, powerful puncher with rock-hard fists. This two-time junior welterweight titleholder has only one career defeat, a decision loss at the hands of Ricky Hatton in 2007. Now, the 28-year-old Urango looks to utilize his quick, precise jab as he steps up in weight class to try and blemish Berto’s perfect record in this scheduled 12-round bout.

The opening bout pits top-rated junior middleweight contender Alfredo Angulo (15-0, 12 KOs) of Coachella, Cal. against former welterweight titleholder and Reading, Pa. native Kermit Cintron (30-2-1, 27 KOs) in a scheduled 12-round junior middleweight contest. Making his fourth appearance on HBO’s hit late-night series, the hard-hitting, aggressive Angulo is on the fast track to boxing stardom, but is about to face his most formidable opponent to date. Throughout his nine-year career, the 29-year-old Cintron has demonstrated tremendous power, size and strength, never backing down from a challenge. His wealth of experience in fighting opponents such as Antonio Margarito and Lovemore N’dou makes him a dangerous opponent for the 26-year-old Angulo.

NO MORE WORDS – THE HEAT IS ON
Final Press Conference Quotes from Silence Mabuza and Yonnhy Perez

(JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA – May 25, 2009) IBF Bantamweight contender Yonnhy Perez approaches his last days of preparation as he readies himself to face South African Silence Mabuza on his home turf.

Having arrived to Johannesburg 10-days ago, Yonnhy can’t wait to lace them up and get home soon. “I feel fine, they have treated us great during our whole stay,” said Perez of the host city and its people. “Everybody is friendly and are making my time here enjoyable. But I did not come all the way here to be a tourist, I came here to win and to take away a mandatory position to challenge the IBF champion soon,” said the undefeated Colombian that resides in Santa Fe Springs, CA.

“We arrived with plenty of time to get the altitude sickness out of the way and to get the time difference and jet lag behind us,” said Perez of his May 15 arrival into Johannesburg after a 30-hour-long adventure. “Now all I want is to get those gloves on my hands and let them fly,” said Perez before the press conference.

FINAL PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

The press conference took place at the Johannesburg television studios of media giant SABC Sport on Monday, May 25, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. local time. SABC will broadcast the event live in South Africa and the entire continent.

SILENCE MABUZA:
“Perez is a good fighter, he has speed, power, and a great amateur career. But he has never faced anybody of name in his career. I fought the best; I have vast experience in situations like this.

“Perez has not faced one quality opponent and now he is in front of me, he is blocking my way to the championship belt and I have to take him out of the way.

“I am very confident this fight will end in a knockout, I will win in spectacular fashion.”

YONNHY PEREZ:
“I know Mabuza from watching him on different DVDs. He is a tough fighter but he is not invincible.

“I have worked long and hard to be here today, he might think he will knock me out but he better be ready for 12 hard rounds.

“An opportunity like this only comes once in a lifetime and I will make the best of it. If he thinks he will clear me out of the ring early he is dead wrong. Things like this don’t happen every day and I know I will win.”

The bout is presented by Branco Sports Promotions, in association with Thompson Boxing Promotions and Gary Shaw Productions and will take place at the Springs Indoor Arena just outside Johannesburg. It will be televised nationwide in South Africa and in the entire continent by the premier broadcaster, SABC Sport, which services 30 million viewers.
