Frank Meets Darden In Yonkers

Monday, March 8th, 2010

YONKERS, N.Y. (Mar. 8, 2010) – The youngest member of the fighting Frank brothers, undefeated light heavyweight Ronson, takes on 33-veteran Raynard “Flash” Darden in Friday night’s (Mar. 12) 8-round co-feature on the “St. Patty’s Day Brawl” pro card, presented by O’Shea Brothers Boxing Promotions, at the PAL Gym in Yonkers, New York.

New York State heavyweight champion Darrel “King David” Madison (14-1, 3 KOs), coming off of an 8-round split decision win last July against Nagy Aguilera, now rated No. 12 by the IBF, defends his title belt against dangerous southpaw Robert Wiggins (20-7-1, 12 KOs) in the 8-round main event.

Rosedale’s (NY) unbeaten light heavyweight Ronson Frank (13-0, 7 KOs), by way of Guyana, recently signed a promotional contract with O’Shea Brothers Boxing Promotions.

“Ronson has rich bloodlines and a lot of potential,” promoter Brian O’Shea said. “His older brothers, Steve (1984 Olympian) and Raul, are both former world title challengers. We’re showcasing Ronson on this card and have big plans for him in the future. With Madison-Wiggins on top, Ronson fighting in the co-feature, and a solid undercard, our March 12th show is loaded from top to bottom with some of the best, most entertaining fighters in the New York area.”

Bronx featherweight Maureen “The Real Million Dollar Baby” Shea (13-2, 7 KOs) is off the card due to a minor injury, but fellow Bronx featherweight Nydia “Da Phnominal” Feliciano (2-0-1, 0 KOs) faces national kickboxing champion Jennifer Han (0-1) in a 6-round bout.

In other 6-round bouts, undefeated Bronx super middleweight Hajro Sujak (5-0, 2 KOs) fights Rondu Campbell (2-4-1), while Astoria (NY) light middleweight (by way of Cyprus) Lambros “Lionheart” Karaolides (5-0, 4 KOs) tangles with Ashantie “Volcano” Hendrickson (1-5).

On the undercard in 4-round bouts are Bronx bantamweight Raul Lopez (2-0-1, 2 KOs) against Reinaldo Cintron (1-1, 1 KO), and Yonkers featherweight favorite Chazz McDowell (1-0, 1 KO) versus Filberto Nieto (1-5, 1 KO).

All fights and fighters are subject to change.

Tickets, priced at $50.00 (General Admission) and $75.00 (Ringside), are available to purchase by calling 914.216.9381. For more information go on line at www.osheabrosboxing.com or call 914.216.9381. Doors open 6:30 PM/ET, first bout 7:30 PM/ET.

TSS PROSPECT WATCH: Logan McGuinness

Monday, March 8th, 2010

SENSATIONAL JUNIOR LIGHTWEIGHT

LOGAN MCGUINNESS IMPROVES TO 10-0!!

CANADIAN PROSPECT WINS WAR WITH

VETERAN PEDRO NAVARRETE

MONTREAL, CANADA (March 8, 2010) Montreal fight fans were treated to another outstanding performance from sensational junior lightweight prospect Logan McGuinness as he battled Mexican veteran Pedro Navarrete in an eight round war on Saturday afternoon.

Fighting at the Montreal Casino for the fifth time in his young professional career, the 22 year old McGuinness improved his unbeaten record to 10-0-0 (4KO’s) as the Orangeville native displayed toughness belying his youth.

Starting off evenly in the first couple of rounds, McGuinness had a brief tough patch in the early going but was able to turn the tide as the battle raged on.

After a hard fought five rounds in which both combatants scored at will, McGuinness proved he had the tougher mettle, taking over the rumble in the sixth round with devastating power shots, while walking through the earlier damaging combinations from the Mexican warrior.

Firing away with brutal intensity in the final two rounds, McGuinness proved that he was equal to the large step up in competition.

Final scores at the end of rumble were 77-75, 77-75 and 79-74. With the loss, Navarrete moved to 24-7-3 (13KO’s).

Alvarez, Maddalone Get Wins In Jersey

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

On Saturday night, at the Tropicana Casino and Resort in Atlantic City, NJ, Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing presented a thrilling, action-packed night of professional boxing, that had the packed house in attendance asking for more. The five bout card was headlined by Atlantic City’s own, Shamone “The Truth” Alvarez taking on hard hitting Alexis Camacho.
Alvarez and Camacho wasted no time getting acquainted, as they both came out in the first firing.

In the 2nd, the southpaw Alvarez began finding the range for his left hand, landing two short overhand lefts that rocked Camacho.

As the fight progressed from each round to the next, Alvarez got stronger and stronger. To Camacho’s credit, he showed guts, and a very good chin, as he continued to press forward as Alvarez’s punches found their mark time and time again.

In the 7th Camacho seemed to be tiring and Alvarez began pouring it on. Just when it looked as though Camacho might be getting back into the fight, landing some vicious punches to the body of Alvarez, a huge straight left hand from Alvarez sent Camacho flat on his back. The referee began his count, but the ringside doctor had seen enough and climbed through the ropes, halting the contest at 1:30 of the 7th round.

It was a very impressive showing for Alvarez as he looks to get himself back into title contention. With the win Alvarez improves to 21-2, 12KO while Camacho drops to 17-3, 16KO.

MADDALONE DOMINATES
In the co-feature bout of the evening, heavyweight fan-favorite, Vinny Maddalone, improved his record to 33-6, 24KO, with a vicious five round beat down of Dominique Alexander (19-8-1, 9KO).

Maddalone came out in the first, stalking Alexander. It was evident that Alexander was going to look to box and stay on the outside against the heavy-handed Maddalone. Maddalone had an answer for that though as he began unleashing thunderous right and lefts to the body of Alexander.

In the third round the body shots began to take their toll and Alexander’s movement slowed, allowing Maddalone to pin him against the ropes and bomb away. A big overhand right dropped Alexander just as the third round was coming to an end.

Maddalone continued where he left off in the 4th, dropping Alexander with a barrage of punches midway through the round and again at the end.

In the 5th a huge left hook to the body dropped Alexander for the fourth time, and the referee had seen enough, calling a halt to the contest at 1:09.

Paz, Micky Ward Comment In Rhode Island

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

Quotes From the “ShamRock’d” Press Conference

(Twin River, Lincoln, RI)

Jimmy Burchfield (CES, President): “This is going to be a great show, a few days before St. Patrick’s Day (Irish), and the night of St. Joseph’s Day (Italian). In boxing, though, we’re all one ethnic group. At this show we’ll have Vinny Paz representing the Italians, Micky Ward the Irish.”

Micky Ward: “It’s going to be a great show. Jimmy always puts on a great card with competitive fights. That’s what fans want to see. I’m training a couple of guys fighting (Joey McCreedy and Sean Eklund). I’m not going to tell you they’re both going to win. They’re both ready and will give it their best — may the best man win.”

Vinny Paz: “I love Micky Ward. He ducked me. (“You were too light,” Ward said.) He’s a great guy and warrior. Jimmy Burchfield is my man.”

Danny O’Connor: “It would be easy for me to be up here and take all the credit, but it’s a team effort, and I don’t think they get enough credit – Leon Margules (promoter), Dave Keefe (head trainer and co-manager) and Rob Valle (co-manager). I want to thank my friends, family and fans. You keep me motivated. I want you to know how much I appreciate it. I am exciting to be in my first main event. It’s so close to home a lot of my fans will be able to watch me. I trained for this fight with (world champion) Juan Urango at the Fight Factory in Tampa. I consistently had good sparring. I’m going to keep doing what’s been successful. I’m improving each fight and, hopefully, this time I’ll top my last fight here.”

Jaime Clampitt: “Jimmy has always been a huge supporter of female boxing, something I’ve been quite involved in. It’s so tough for us getting fights and I thank Jimmy. This is a really exciting time for me. My daughter has her first birthday on St. Patrick’s Day. I gave birth last year and here I am fighting again. I feel better than before. I want to thank everyone for supporting me all the way.”

Eddie Soto: “I didn’t have to take this fight but Eklund deserved it. I was to say I was only down once, the other time I slipped (in their first fight won by Soto). I’m very strong and coming to fight hard for all my Latino fans out there. It (first fight vs. Eklund) could have gone either way. I wasn’t a judge and didn’t score the fight. I’m ready. Don’t leave your seats if the lights go out because it’s only going to be from all of our punches”

Sean Eklund: “Eddie (Soto) didn’t have to take this fight; you’re showing you’re a man. Me and Eddie will deliver. I’m looking forward to this fight, especially getting away from training with Micky. It’s been brutal.”

Joey McCreedy: “I love fighting at Twin River. I’m going back to the future with Dicky Eklund and Micky Ward at my side. It brings back good memories. Like Micky said, me and Sean are ready. I feel bad for whoever I’m fighting. I’m like a pit bull in a cage. They’re going to let m out March 19th. We’re a big family at CES; you gotta go hard or go home. It’s do or die for me.”

Keith Kozlin: “I’m really excited to be back fighting at Twin River. It’s a great place. My family and friends live it here. Jimmy always puts on great shows like this show here. I’m proud to be part of it. It’s going to be a great night of boxing.”
