Baldomir’s Back

By Boxing News August 29th, 2008

SAN DIEGO, Calif., (August 28, 2008) – Sycuan Ringside Promotions announced today that former World Boxing Council Welterweight Champion Carlos Baldomir is presently in training camp in the U.S. preparing for a major fight later this year.

Baldomir, (44-11-6, 13 KO’s) from Argentina—who hails from the same hometown as the late, great World Middleweight Champion Carlos Monzon—is hopeful of being pitted against one of the top welterweights in his division, namely Margarito, Clottey or Cotto.

Carlos has fought some of the best in his division including having an impressive win via disqualification over the tough and strong puncher, Joshua Clottey, in November 1999. Over the last two years Carlos ‘Tata’ Baldomir thoroughly upset the boxing applecart with his back-to-back dominating victories over Judah, by way of unanimous decision and Gatti, via a TKO in the ninth round, in their respective backyards of New York City and Atlantic City, New Jersey in 2006.

“I was not focused in 2007 and I let some important opportunities slip out of my hands. I am hungry, serious and committed, and I have a new trainer. Abel Sanchez is teaching me new things and helping me to improve on my boxing skills. I feel comfortable training under his tutelage. He is a classy guy who understands me well,” stated the former world champion.

“I am thrilled to continue to be a part of the Sycuan family and after serious discussions with Scott Woodworth and Sean Gibbons of Sycuan, I believe I will have the opportunity to fight Margarito, Clottey or Cotto.

Carlos Baldomir added, “The greatest of fighters have suffered losses and have come back stronger than before. I have a lot of experience and after seeing fighters like Antonio Margarito successfully come back to fight after a long layoff, I strongly believe I am prepared to step back in the ring with the best, and regain the belt,” added the former champion.

In Baldomir’s last fight in November, 2007, he won by majority decision against Luciano Perez at the Morongo Casino Resort. In July of 2007, he suffered a 12 round unanimous decision loss to Vernon Forrest. Although persistent and aggressive, Baldomir appeared somewhat out of form against a very motivated and well conditioned Forrest.

“I know what it takes to become champion and I will surprise the skeptics as I did back in 2006,” stated the confident former welterweight champion. Baldomir—whose size and power will be a real challenge for Margarito, Clottey or Cotto—is boxing’s most recent and best “Cinderella” story.

“We are proud that Baldomir is serious about fighting again and he is in the United States to seriously prepare for his next fight. He has been the Cinderella Man and we continue to believe in him and his abilities,” said Sean Gibbons of Sycuan Ringside Promotions.

Sycuan Ringside Promotions–the first Native American-owned boxing promotional company made its promotional debut in 2004. Sycuan Ringside Promotions is led by Glenn Quiroga, president; Willie Tucker, executive vice president; and Scott Woodworth, vice president.

Sycuan Ringside Promotions has many notable boxers in its stable, including undefeated World Boxing Organization junior lightweight champion Joan Guzman, World Boxing Council super bantamweight champion Israel Vazquez, former WBC welterweight champion Carlos Baldomir, International Boxing Federation former lightweight champion Julio Diaz, World Boxing Association super bantamweight champion Celestino Caballero, teenage super lightweight sensation Jorge Paez Jr. and undefeated cruiserweight prospect Shawn Hawk.

Sept. 5 ShoBox Specifics

By Boxing News August 29th, 2008

NEW YORK (Aug. 29, 2008) – ShoBox: The New Generation delivers a thrilling night of boxing as the always exciting ShoBox alum Antonio DeMarco faces more experienced Jose Reyes and unbeaten ShoBox alum Yonnhy Perez takes on the aggressive Tomas Rojas, Friday, Sept. 5, live on SHOWTIME at 11 p.m. ET/Pt (delayed on the west coast).

In the 10-round main event, lightweight contender DeMarco (19-1-1, 14 KOs), of Los Mochis, Mexico, will attempt to score his third ShoBox victory in one year when he takes on World Boxing Organization Latin American (WBO/LA) Lightweight Champion Reyes (23-4, 8 KOs), of Aguas Buenas, Puerto Rico.

The 10-round bantamweight co-feature will pit North American Boxing Federation (NABF) Bantamweight Champion/World Boxing Council (WBC) No. 6 contender Perez (17-0, 12 KOs), of Santa Fe Springs, Calif., by way of Cartagena, Colombia, against former Mexican 115-pound champion Rojas (27-10, 18 KOs), of Veracruz, Mexico.

The fights will be promoted by Gary Shaw Productions from the Star of the Desert Arena in Primm, Nevada.

In his last ShoBox outing, DeMarco recorded his eighth consecutive victory by scoring three knockdowns en route to a fifth-round TKO over previously undefeated Juan Castaneda May 2, 2008, on SHOWTIME.

ShoBox expert analyst Steve Farhood praised DeMarco after the bout for a valiant effort.

“DeMarco is a pure fighter and a fantastic television fighter,” Farhood said.

Nearly eight months earlier in his 10-round debut on Sept. 7, 2007, DeMarco dazzled the ShoBox audience by scoring an impressive 10-round unanimous decision over fellow-prospect Nick Casal. Making his fifth start in six months, DeMarco opened a brutal cut at the top of Casal’s nose in the seventh round and cut his opponent’s lip with punishing combinations throughout. Two of the judges scored the contest 97-93, while the other had it 96-94.

DeMarco will be taking a major step up when he fights Reyes, who will be his toughest opponent to date. Naturally larger and stronger for a lightweight, DeMarco can use his power against Reyes to control the fight. While Reyes has been down at least five times in his career, he has never been stopped.

If DeMarco can capitalize on his power and stop Reyes, he will prove that he belongs in the upper tier of the lightweight prospects. DeMarco has won the last 11 fights he has

“I try to use my intelligence in the ring,” DeMarco said. “I’ve got some momentum right now, so I’ve just got to stay smart. Reyes is a dangerous opponent and I need to beat him before I can think about my next move.”

The once-beaten lightweight is known for his aggression and speed, but he knows he needs to keep his head cool and not look past Reyes.

“I want to fight the best and the toughest opponents,” DeMarco said. “Right now, Reyes is a tough opponent because he’s motivated and has five wins in a row. I know it’s important to keep my winning streak alive. I’ve won eight straight. I need to bring my best to Nevada.”

The five-foot-seven-inch Reyes captured the WBO/LA lightweight title with a 12-round unanimous decision over Humberto Tapia on March 23, 2007. Reyes has since made three successful defenses of his title. In his last outing on May 16, 2008, Reyes retained his belt with a 12-round unanimous decision over Noe Bolanos in Kissimmee, Fla.

A winner of five straight, Reyes has proven that he is fighting better then ever. His experience over DeMarco, having fought 189 rounds to DeMarco’s 73, presents the opportunity to thrust his career into the next level.

Reyes cannot afford to lose this battle and must give a solid performance on ShoBox.

“I’ve won five in a row so I need to keep winning,” Reyes said. “This is a great experience to fight on national television. I’ve studied DeMarco. He’s a very good fighter and sharp puncher if you stand in front of him.

“I don’t plan on letting him control the fight by standing there in front of him. I’ve been working on my range to combat his fast combinations.”

Anxious to get back into the ring and in front of the cameras, Reyes has been training hard in preparation for one of the biggest fights of his career.

“I wish the fight was right now because I’m ready to go,” Reyes said. “I’m the underdog, but this is a big opportunity for me. “We’re just excited to fight on SHOWTIME and we want to make the best of it. We want to come ready and make a good showing.”

Perez, a four-time Colombian national champion, is big for a bantamweight. His size, strength and punching power proved too much for Alexander Federov in Perez’ ShoBox debut on Oct. 5, 2007. Despite suffering a cut over his left eye in the third round, Perez won all three rounds on the scorecards before the referee stopped the bout 44 seconds into the fourth.

On June 27, 2008, Perez, who also is the World Boxing Association (WBA) No. 8/WBO No. 9/International Boxing Federation (IBF) No. 11 bantamweight contender won the NABF bantamweight crown with a 12-round unanimous decision (80-72 and 78-74 twice) over former world title challenger Oscar Andrade.

A 13-year professional, Rojas captured the Mexican 115-pound title with a 12-round unanimous decision over Javier Torres on April 8, 2001, in Veracruz. In addition to three successful title defenses, Rojas also won the International Boxing Association (IBA) flyweight crown by securing a third-round TKO over Alejandro Montiel on May 17, 2002.

Nick Charles will call the action from ringside with Steve Farhood serving as expert analyst. The executive producer of ShoBox is Gordon Hall with Richard Gaughan producing and Rick Phillips directing. ShoBox recently celebrated seven outstanding years on the air.

Petruzelli, a former cast member of the Ultimate Fighter, has won eight of his last 10 fights.

A major MMA attraction, the undefeated Kimbo, of Perrine, Fla., near Miami, is trained by respected legendary fighter and trainer, the no-nonsense Bas Rutten. Kimbo is coming off an exciting third-round TKO over James “Colossus” Thompson on May 31.

Before turning pro, the hard-hitting Kimbo grew up in and around Perrine. He made a name for himself on the Internet where videos of the bald, bearded, menacing-looking former underground bare-knuckle street fighter have been downloaded literally millions of times on YouTube.

Kimbo’s first two MMA fights lasted 62 seconds. In a devastating, memorable performance, Kimbo blew up Tank Abbott in 43 seconds last Feb. 16 in Miami.

Shamrock, of Reno, Nev., is a true MMA legend and one of the biggest draws in any sport. Known as “The World’s Most Dangerous Man,’’ 22 of his 26 wins have come via submission.

One of the sport’s most recognizable and popular figures, Shamrock has fought in some of the biggest and most important fights in MMA history. He has defeated the likes of Rutten, Maurice Smith, Dan “The Beast” Severn and Kimo Leopoldo in an illustrious career.

Shields, of San Francisco, is a life-long vegetarian who was raised in a remote area in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of Northern California. Undefeated for nearly five years and a winner of 10 straight, including six inside the distance, Shields is considered one of the best in the world at 170 pounds.

On July 26 in Stockton, Calif., Shields captured the EliteXC belt with a 1:03, first-round submission over highly regarded Nick Thompson. A Cesar Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt, Shields’ last five fights have ended in the first round.

Daley, of Nottingham, England, is a confident, dangerous Muay Thai specialist whose style has been described as an aggressive mix of striking, striking and more striking. Extremely popular in England, he has won his last six fights, five by KO. Thirteen of Daley’s 18 wins have come by stoppage.

Nicknamed “Semtex” after an explosive that British armed forces use to demolish large structures, Daley stopped previously unbeaten Bojan Kosednar in the first round in his last start on July 12 in the UK. When he’s not fighting, Daley has been involved in a project with Mothers Against Guns in London.

Carano, aka “Crush” on American Gladiators, resides in Las Vegas. She’ll be making her first start since registering an entertaining, crowd-pleasing second-round TKO over Kaitlin Young on May 31.

The most recognizable female MMA fighter in the world, Carano is a skilled Muay Thai specialist with model looks and world-class ability. She has mostly dominated her opposition.

Kobald, of Minneapolis, began her career 16-0-1. A tough talker who has predicted an early- round knockout, Kobald holds a second round TKO victory over the respected Shayna Baszler.

Rua, of Curitiba, Brazil, is a classy Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai black belt whose aggressive style makes for scintillating scraps. A former EliteXC 185-pound champ and the brother of Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, “Ninja’’ has won five of his last six, including a first-round TKO over Tony Bonello last June 14.

Radach, of Castle Rock, Wash., has been on a roll. The heavy-handed veteran has won five of his last six fights. Regarded as a top young prospect until an injury sidelined him for three years, Radach owns several notable triumphs in a career that began in March 2001.

Santos, a talented, aggressive-minded Brazilian, stormed onto the women’s scene in spectacular fashion in her United States debut on July 26 in Stockton. In an overwhelming performance that lasted just under six minutes, she overpowered Baszler en route to winning by impressive second-round TKO.

A product of the world-famous Chute Boxe Academy in Curitiba, Brazil, Santos is trained by her husband and fellow fighter, Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos.

The more experienced Takahashi, of Japan, has won two of her last three.

Berto lives in Orlando and will be making his fifth start for EliteXC. Aina, who lost a controversial decision to world-class Nick Diaz in September 2007, is coming off a win over Strikeforce lightweight champion Kaleo Kwan last June 14.

Remillard, Godfrey Fight Friday

By Boxing News August 27th, 2008

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (August 27, 2008) – Mexican fighters are feared worldwide because of their toughness in the ring. WBC World Youth featherweight title-holder Matt “Sharp Shooter” Remillard, however, has accelerated his relatively young pro career by defeating a series of Mexican opponents.

Remillard (14-0, 7 KOs), fighting out of nearby Manchester, takes on new Texas State champion Adauto Gonzalez (10-5, 3 KOs) for the vacant WBC USNBC featherweight title in the 10-round co-feature on the “Title Wave” card, airing live this week on ESPN Friday Night Fights from Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Four of Remillard’s last six opponents have been of Mexican heritage and Gonzalez continues that trend.

NABF cruiserweight champion Matt “Too Smooth” Godfrey defends his belt against challenger Emmanuel Nwodo. Godfrey (16-1, 9 KOs), rated No. 5 by the WBC, faces former USBA champion, Nigerian-born Nwodo (22-4, 18 KOs), currently rated No. 12 by the WBA and No. 14 by the WBC, in the 12-round main event on “Title Wave,” promoted by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc. (CES), in association with Mohegan Sun and ESPN.

Remillard, recently named the NABF Top Prospect of the Year, was one of the most decorated U.S. amateur boxers during the early part of this century. He passed on an opportunity to qualify for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team and signed a pro contract with CES in 2005. As an amateur boxer, Matt Remillard defeated several highly rated national opponents, including top pro prospects such as Brandon Rios (18-0, 12 KOs) and John Jackson (12-1, 12 KOs). .

Two years ago, Matt suffered a serious wrist injury that twice required surgery, keeping him sidelined for nearly 1 ½ years, as well as costing him his WBC Youth super featherweight title belt.

While rehabilitating his wrist, Remillard remained in the gym daily to stretch, run, walk and do calisthenics. Unable to use his left hand, he strengthened his right, and eventually learned how to comfortably fight as a southpaw. His versatility has paid off in three impressive wins since his return.

2004 U.S. Olympian Jason “Big Six” Estrada (13-1, 3 KOs), rated No. 11 by the NABF and NABO, faces Texas champion Domonic Jenkins (13-8-1, 6 KOs) in an eight-round Special Heavyweight Attraction.

In a pair of four-round bouts, Ledyard’s (CT) unbeaten super middleweight Brian Macy (4-0, 1 KO), 2000 National PAL champion and U. of Connecticut graduate, faces Shawn Kirk (4-2, 2 KOs), while light heavyweight Keith Kozlin makes his pro debut versus Borngard Washington (0-3).

In two four-round female bouts on the undercard, Hartford’s popular welterweight Addy Irizarry (5-2, 2 KOs) is up against her toughest challenge in former world champion Yvonne “Silk” Reiss (7-12-1) and Mystic (CT) super bantamweight Karen Dulin (0-1) goes for her first pro victory versus Christina Leadbeater (1-1, 1 KO). All fighters and bouts are subject to change.

Tickets for “Title Wave” are priced at $30.00, $45.00, $75.00 and $100.00 and available to purchase by calling CES (401.724.2253/2254), going on line at www.cesboxing.com or www.mohegansun.com, at the Mohegan Sun box office or any TicketMaster outlet.

Contact CES (401.724.2253/2254/www.cesboxing.com) for more information. Doors open at 6:30 PM/ET, first bout at 7:30 PM/ET.

Shumenov An Underrated Prospect

By Boxing News August 24th, 2008

KAZAKHSTAN (August 24, 2008) – Former Kazakhstan Olympian Beibut “The Beast” Shumenov is the greatest fighter in the world that most boxing fans haven’t heard of, at least not at this stage of his young professional career.

In less than 10 months, 24-year-old Shumenov has won all six of his pro fights, five by knockout, capturing three title belts – WBC Asian Boxing Council, WBO Asia Pacific and PABA Interim light heavyweight championships.

Earlier this month in Chimkent, Kazakhaston, Shumenov (6-0, 5 KOs) easily won a 12-round decision, in his WBC and WBO Asian title defenses, against former WBC title-holder Montell “Ice” Griffin (50-8, 30 KOs), whose victims over the years include a pair of future Hall of Famers, Roy Jones, Jr. and James Toney (twice). Beibut won every round, nearly stopping Griffin in the opening round, en route to shutting out the former world champion by lop-sided scores of 120-108, 120-108, 120-107. After the fight Griffin, rated No. 22 by the WBA, was taken to the hospital for stitches for a cut over his eye as well as to get his ribs examined after Beibut’s devastating body attack.

Shumenov, already rated No. 15 by the WBO prior to his victory against Griffin, was highly touted in the 2004 Olympics, winning his opening bout against Polish representative Aleksy Kuziemsky (presently 15-0 as a pro prospect), 37-22. Amidst rumors of a hand injury, Beibut was defeated in the round of 16 by Turkey’s Ihsan Yildorim Tarham, 27-19, in the same light heavyweight division Andre Ward of the United States won a gold medal.

Last November in North Carolina, Shumenov won his pro debut with a first-round TKO of Walter Edwards, followed in order by an opening-round knockout of Cedric Howard in Florida, and fourth-round TKO of 68-fight veteran Shannon Miller in Tennessee. In April,

Beibut put Donnell Wiggins (24-10-4) to sleep in the second round of their fight in Kazakhstan for the WBC Asian and PABA Interim light heavyweight crowns. Ten days later, Beibut stopped Lavell Fingers (26-2) in the first-round of their April 22 fight, also held in Kazakhstan. Beibut successfully defended his two Asian titles and also collected the PABA Interim crown.

Trained by Kenny Adams and advised by E Point K Consulting, Shumenov is resting in Kazakhaston and will return to Las Vegas in late September, early October to prepare for his next fight. Beibut plans to make a title run in 2009.

The word is slowly getting out in boxing: “Beibut The Beast” is on the loose!

OUMA, MOORE TO FIGHT OCT. 4

By Boxing News August 23rd, 2008

Irish themed boxing show scheduled for Philadelphia on Saturday, October 4

Promoter Tom Moran, the former manager of heavyweight titlist Tim Witherspoon and current manager of former world junior middleweight champion Kassim “The Dream” Ouma, has announced what he calls “A major Irish boxing show” to be held at the Northeast Philadelphia National Guard Armory on Saturday, October 4.

Headlining the card will be Ouma, 25-5-1 (15 KOS), a native of Uganda who because of his relationship with Moran and several Irish fighters has described himself as being “Black Irish.” Ouma was the subject of a lauded 2008 documentary film called “Kassim the Dream,” which chronicled his life from being a kidnapped child soldier in Uganda to his ultimate defection and rise to world boxing champion.

Fighting in separate 8 round bouts in the co-features are extremely popular junior middleweight James Moore, 16-1 (10 KOS), a native of County Wicklow who fights out of New York, and middleweight Simon “Slick Fighting Irish” O’Donnell, 6-1 (3 KOS), a native of County Galway who fights out of Philadelphia.

“This is going to be a great New York-Philadelphia Irish boxing celebration,” said Moran, who stressed that once New Yorkers hit the New Jersey Turnpike it is only a 55 minute ride to the fight venue. “This is going to be the biggest night of Irish boxing in Philadelphia since Tommy Loughran fought here in the 1930s. If anyone was at that fight, they are welcome to come to this one and compare.”

Moran is thrilled to be promoting in Northeast Philadelphia, which along with neighboring Bucks County has large Irish and Irish-American communities.

“The Irish have always come out to support their fighters,” Moran said. “In Moore and O’Donnell they will get to see two of the most exciting young prospects in the world. I have always considered Kassim to be an honorary Irishman, so it is going to be a great night.”

“Fighting in Philadelphia will be a thrill for me,” said Moore, the longtime captain of the Irish national amateur team who is trained by Lennox Blackmoore. “The fans there are very enthusiastic, so I am looking forward to putting on a great show and increasing my fan base.”
